Khieu Samphan (born 28 July 1931) is a former Cambodian communist politician who served as chairman of the state presidium of Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) from 1976 to 1979. * As such, he served as Cambodia's head of state and was one of the Khmer Rouge's most influential figures, although Pol Pot remained the party's General Secretary (highest official). * On August 7, 2014, he was found guilty of genocide and was sentenced to life in Cambodia. * He is the last surviving senior member of the Khmer Rouge after Nuon Chea's death in August 2019.
