Early life
Robinson was born in Fort Stewart, Georgia. Due to his mother, Linda Wolfe, and her father's military service, he spent his childhood in places, including Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Drum in Watertown, New York, and six years in Heidelberg, Germany. Wolfe began as a supply technician and became a member of the Army corps. Robinson studied voice and musical theater in high school. He attended Carthage Central High School in Carthage, New York, for his first three years of high school before he and his mother moved to El Paso, Texas, where he spent his senior year at Americas High School.
Career
Khalid began writing and performing music in high school, and he began posting his early works on SoundCloud. Khalid climbed to second position on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart in July 2016, just shy of graduating from America's High School. His single "Location" began charting, leading to his appearance in numerous publications, including Billboard, Yahoo!, BuzzFeed, and Rolling Stone. "Location" ended the year with a rank 20 on the US Mainstream R&B/Hip Airplay chart, and in 2017 reached the top 10 on the US Hot R&B Songs chart with production from Syk Sense, Tunji Ige, and Smash David. On The Fader's website, the music video for "Location" premiered. The album's second single, "Young Dumb & Broke," became a hit at rhythmic styles and swept over to pop radio in early 2018.
Khalid's single "Electric," Alina Baraz's single "Electric," was released in January 2017. His collaboration with Brasstracks, "Whirlwind," was part of the Yours Truly & Adidas Originals Songs From Scratch collection, and he has received over 700,000 SoundCloud plays. Khalid also contributed uncredited vocals to Kendrick Lamar's album "The Heart Part 4" which was released on March 24, 2017. Khalid and Alessia Cara appeared in "1-800-273-8255," making it Khalid's highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100.
On his 21-city Location Tour, including the 1,500-capacity Tricky Falls in El Paso, he sold out every venue. Following the conclusion of the tour, his debut studio album American Teen was released on March 3, 2017. At the 2018 ceremony, the album received critical acclaim and Grammy Award nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Song (for "Location") respectively. Khalid's next album was titled "Silence," an American DJ Marshmello's collaboration that was released on August 11, 2017 via RCA Records. The album debuted on the Top 200 in over 28 countries. It dominated the dance charts in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and the United States, and it was ranked in the Top ten of more than fifteen countries, including Germany, Sweden, and Norway. It also appeared on the year-end charts of Hungary, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. In addition, it had been designated multi-platinum in several countries. In the Marvel film Black Panther, Khalid's song "The Ways" with rapper Swae Lee was included. The song peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 as of February 23, 2018. On Lorde's "Homemade Dynamite" remix, he collaborated with Lorde, SZA, and Post Malone in 2017. In 2018, he recorded "Love Lies," a duet with singer Normani, which was included in the Love, Simon film soundtrack, which debuted in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. In May 2018, he wrote "Youth" in collaboration with Canadian artist Shawn Mendes. On September 14, the first day of two hometown shows, he also released a song titled "Better." The song debuted in the top five on pop radio and was ranked in the top five.
Khalid released an EP, Suncity, on October 19, 2018, via RCA Records, in October 2018. The EP debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 8. The album also produced the song "Saturday Nights," which was later updated to include country artist Kane Brown.
Khalid released the single "Talk" in February 2019, and he made his debut on Saturday Night Live on March 9, 2019 performing "Talk" and "Better." On April 5, 2019, his second studio album, Free Spirit, was released, as well as a accompanying short film. In its first week, Khalid's first US number-one album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with 202,000 album-equivalent units (including 85,000 pure album sales) in its first week.
Khalid made history by becoming the first and only artist to occupy the entire top 5 of the Billboard R&B Songs chart on April 20, 2019.
