Kevin James (born Kevin George Knipfing, 1965) is an American actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer.
He is best known for his role on the CBS sitcom The King of Queens (1998–2007), for which he was nominated for the 2006 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Early life
Kevin George Knipfing was born in Mineola, New York, on April 26, 1965. He grew up in Stony Brook, New York. He is Janet Knipfing Jr.'s second son and an insurance company owner. James has an elder brother, comedian, and actor Gary Valentine, as well as a sister, Leslie. He and his siblings were raised Catholic. James graduated from Ward Melville High School. During his time on the wrestling team, he took the number one position, just ahead of friend and potential professional wrestler Mick Foley. Both athletes competed in the 145 lb weight class. Foley took over the first string position after a season-ending back injury to James. James and Foley both went on to study at the State University of New York in Cortland, where he played halfback on the varsity football team until a back injury that permanently ended his athletic hopes.

Career
In 1989, James began doing stand-up comedy, making his debut at the East Side Comedy Club in Long Island, which was run by Richie Minervini. He rose to fame through many television shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman, Dennis Miller Live, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. On Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians, James was ranked at #76. On Just for Laughs, an annual comedy festival in Montreal, Quebec, James has also performed his stand-up routine. He appeared on televisions for Mazzio's Italian Eatery later in the evening. Kevin James, the Small Stuff, did his own stand-up special in 2001. He has also appeared on Just for Laughs as a musical guest. In 1991, James' first television appearance on The New Candid Camera, in which he honed his comedic timing and improvisation skills as the actor who pulled the practical jokes on unsuspecting people.
