She was a member of the Atomic Kitten from 1998 to her first appearance in 2001 and again from 2012 to her second departure in 2017.

The bulk of her television work is focused on light entertainment and reality shows. Katona was the winner of the third series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! In 2004, she became the jungle's first queen and runner-up of Celebrity Big Brother 8 in 2011.

Katona announced on November 21, 2012, she had rejoined Atomic Kitten, replacing Jenny Frost.

Early life

Katona was born in Warrington, Cheshire, England. Hungarian who migrated Budapest to London during the Second World War. Katona's maternal grandfather is Hungarian. As a child, she was put in foster care and brought up by four sets of foster parents, as well as eight different schools. She left school at sixteen to become a lap dancer, then joined a dance troupe that toured Europe.

Personal life

Katona has five children from three marriages. She married former Westlife singer Brian McFadden on January 5, 2002 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathfeigh, Ireland. They have two children. McFadden filed for divorce from Katona in September 2004 and was separated for two years before their divorce was finalised in December 2006.

Mark Croft, a retired taxi driver, married Katona on February 14, 2007. They have a daughter (b.2007) and a son (b.2008). Katona's book Still Standing: The Autobiography reveals how she met Croft while delivering cocaine to her mother Sue in September 2005. Katona had just returned to Warrington after six weeks in Arizona for depression, alcohol, and heroin. They declared a breakup in 2009 but reconciled and then divorced in 2011.

On September 14, 2014, Katona married former rugby league (Warrington Wolves A-Team) player George Kay. They have one child (b.2014), but they did not receive a six-year prison term after being arrested for blackmail in 2008. Katona and her mother were both arrested by police on September 7, 2015, after he allegedly assaulted her at their home in Crowborough and was later arrested by detectives. Kay was charged with assault by beating and carrying a banned weapon, but charges were later dismissed due to a lack of evidence. Kay, like Katona, suffered with mental disorders and died on July 5, 2019 after an overdose. Katona was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2005 and has been working to raise concerns of mental health issues, like her mother Sue before her. Katona has dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

At their £1.5 million home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, Katona, Croft, and their young daughter Heidi were held hostage on July 15th. Three men were forcibly admitted to their house, one of them holding Katona at knife point, while the others forced Croft to show them where valuables were kept. Nobody was hurt, but the men were left with a blue BMW and other valuables valued between £100,000 and £150,000. The undamaged vehicle was discovered ten miles (16 km) away on Reeves Road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, on July 19, 2007. Katona was admitted to the Priory Hospital with bipolar disorder the same day. Max Clifford, her publicist, said she had suffered with the condition for some time, but the trauma had exacerbated her symptoms.

Katona was declared bankrupt at the High Court in London on August 21, 2008, after failing to pay the final £82,000 of a £417,000 tax bill.

Katona applied for bankruptcy at Wigan County Court on July 2nd, 2013.

After the school attendance rate of one of her children's students had dropped below 50% in 2018, the Brighton Magistrates' Court ordered Katona to pay a £500 fine on May 8. Katona's mother argued that she did not have childcare and that she would have to carry her child to work. Katona had pleaded "not guilty" and said she would represent herself in court at a recent hearing.

Atomic Kitten's record label, Innocent Records, was considering destroying them due to their modest success, but the group was forced to unleash "Whole Again," the group's second single from the album. However, Katona left the company several days before the single was released due to her pregnancy. Though Katona's vocals are included in the original release of "Whole Again" and appears in its music video, Precious singer Jenny Frost replaced her in the lineup, and the single was re-recorded. "Whole Again" became the company's first top-one hit in the United Kingdom and stayed at the top for four weeks in a row. "Whole Again" was released around the world and ranked number one in 18 other countries, with six weeks in Germany and New Zealand among others.
