Kerry Marie Butler (born June 18, 1971) is an American actress best known for her role in theatre.

Early life

Butler, a native of Bensonhurst, began working in commercials at the age of three. "When I saw Annie... I was so excited." I knew this was what I wanted to do." Kerry began acting again at the age of nine after her mother's four-year absence, and she has been at it since.

Butler earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theatre at Ithaca College in 1992.

Personal life

Butler continues to perform in a variety of workshops, readings, and benefit concerts. She is a vegetarian and feminist whose concerns include youth education, human rights abuses, genocide, and environmental issues.

Butler is married to Muppet writer and puppeteer Joey Mazzarino, and they have two children, two of whom they adopted from Ethiopia. Segi, their elder daughter, is the inspiration for Sesame Street's hit song I Love My Hair. Sumaya is their second daughter's name.

Ado Annie was portrayed in Europe by Ado Annie. Vicki in The Bright Lights, Big City, Barrow, and Claudia in The Folsom Head were among Vicki's other appearances in New York. She has also worked on various businesses.

Butler made her Broadway debut in 1993 in the role of Ms. Jones in the musical Blood Brothers, where she also understudied Linda's role. Butler appeared in Belle for Disney's Beauty and the Beast's Toronto production in 1995, and she was nominated for a Dora Award for her appearance. Butler stayed on Broadway as Belle, but after being on Broadway for more than two years, she left the musical in September 1997 and was replaced by Debbie Gibson. She then went to Les Misérables to play Eponine.

Shelley, the love interest in the acclaimed Off-Broadway original musical Bat Boy: The Musical, performed by Shannon in 2001. Butler said that "We were really building an audience before September 11" despite the fact that the show had a "fanatical following." We never recovered after that. People didn't want to go out at all, let alone downtown. In December 2001, Bat Boy was banned from playing cricket.

Butler appeared in Hairspray, the musical interpretation of the John Waters 1988 film of the same name, in February 2002. She had originated in workshops. Hairspray opened in August 2002 and "became an immediate Broadway smash" after an out-of-town tryout in Seattle. And in a star-studded ensemble cast, reviewers selected Butler out for her sparkling role as the eccentric best friend. The show received eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Butler was nominated for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as the Clarence Derwent Award for her role.

Butler, the limited run of the intimate Australian musical Prospray at the York Theatre, brought the free-spirited performance artist Maddie to the stage during the production of Hairspray. Butler appeared on the television show Sesame Street in March 2002 as Ms. Camp, a letter carrier. Butler produced a television pilot for Fox titled Twins during her time in Hairspray, but it wasn't picked up for the season.

Butler, who appeared in Hairspray for a year, left the role in July 2003 and was replaced by Jenn Gambatese.

Butler was cast as Audrey in the Broadway revival of the musical Little Shop of Horrors following the conclusion of her Hairspray role. Butler revived her long-lost childhood Brooklyn accent to portray Audrey, the love affair with a sadistic dentist boyfriend and a heart of gold. Butler appeared in the first Off-Broadway musical Miracle Brothers at the Vineyard Theatre in the fall of 2005. Butler stepped back from the Broadway stage to star in the latest musical Xanadu, based on the 1980 roller-disco film starring Olivia Newton-John. She played both Clio/Kira, a Greek muse who inspires and falls in love with a struggling artist. Butler mastered roller skating for the role and appeared on skates for almost every day of the show. The musical opened in July 2007 to brisk critical acclaim, and it was the surprise hit of the summer. It was widely predicted to be a flop.

Butler had been nominated for the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Achievement for her role in Xanadu.

The former includes a delectable parody of 'Saturday Night Live's' most popular skit, 'The Californians.'

Butler appeared in the world premiere of the musical Beetlejuice at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., in the role of Barbara Maitland from October to November 2018. Barbara is a woman of simple pleasures, and she and her partner, Adam, are also haunted by a recently deceased ghost who is haunted her own house, as well as dealing with the trickster ghost Beetlejuice.

Barbara Maitland appeared in the Broadway revival of the show from March 2019 to its close in March 2020. She is one of the original cast members of Beetlejuice who returned to Broadway in April 2022.
