Kenshi Yonezu Career

Early musical career

Kenshi Yonezu was born in Tokushima, Japan, on March 10, 1991, in the rural area. Yonezu, especially his father, found it difficult to associate with others as a child. Yonezu used to believe that his mother knew him. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of 20 and has Marfan syndrome.

Late Rabbit Edda, Yonezu's first foray into music, formed a band with his pal Hiroshi Nakajima in 2006, where he and his friend Hiroshi Nakajima formed a Late Rabbit Edda to compete in the school culture festival. While Nakajima was the guitarist, he served as the singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist. He created a website for the band in late 2007, broadcasting song lyrics and short stories. Yonezu wrote songs for the band from April 2008 to March 2009, and they uploaded 24 original songs to Nico Nico Douga's video sharing website Nico Nico Douga under the name Hachi. None of the songs were well liked, with "Beelzebub" receiving only 23,000 views. In this period, Yonezu began blogging Tekit Edda (EDDA).

After high school, Yonezu migrated to Osaka and began attending a fine arts academy. When he was a student at the university, he started releasing songs using Vocaloid software Hatsune Miku instead, which were also very popular. "Musunde Rasetsu to Mukuro," his first song to receive over 1,000,000 views on the site, was released in 2009. Despite the fact that Yonezu had recorded over 30 songs sung by himself, he deleted them as his Vocaloid songs became more popular. Denshi-ch Hachibangai (formerly "Electronic Notebook 8th Avenue"), one of five blogs named with the Diamond Award at the 2009 WebMoney Awards, Yonezu renamed his blog Denshi-ch Hachibangai (aka: "Electronic Notebook 8th Avenue).

"Clock Lock Works," Yonezu's song "Clock Lock Works" appeared on an Exit Tunes compilation album, the first time a song of his appeared on an album. On a Vocalolegend feat, "Musunde Rasetsu to Mukuro" was featured in January. Exit Tunes' second Oricon top ten compilation album Hatsune Miku. In 2010: Hanataba to Suis, and Official Orange in November were two self-produced albums; Hanataba to Suis in February, and Official Orange in November. Yonezu's songs were included on numerous Exit Tunes compilations, including the Vocalonexus one, in 2010. and 2011. Hatsune Miku, the second Vocaloid album to debut on Oricon's top-ten lists, was first on Oricon's albums chart. His songs were featured on Hatsune Miku's Project DIVA F (2012), Hatsune Miku (2010), and in the Hatsune Miku concert Miku no Hi Dankanshasai (2012), the first number one DVD/Blu-ray for a virtual artist. Seven of his albums have been watched more than 1,000,000 times, including the song "Matryoshka," which had received 5,000,000 views by 2012.

Yonezu joined Minakata Kenky (, "Minakata Laboratory"), a group with whom he had worked since his "Clock Lock Works" video appeared in November 2010. Yonezu's last Hachi Vocaloid video appeared on January 23, 2011.

Late Rabbit Edda wasn't around until 2010. Ernst Eckman had been renamed and they'd introduced Sumimoto, a drummer, to their lineup. "Oborozuki to Sono Kán," as Ernst Eckman, released a single song on MySpace (, "Crescent Moon and That Plan"). Yonezu began to feel that he did not function well with others and decided to concentrate solely on Vocaloid songs, instead of being a member of a band.

Balloom, an independent music label for Internet musicians, was launched in March 2011 by Yonezu and seven other musicians to broaden their musical possibilities. Diorama's debut album, which debuted at number 6 and sold over 45,000 copies, marking the company's first appearance on the label to date. The album was one of the winners of the 5th CD Shop Awards, an honor that was voted on by music store employees. Yonezu was selected as a major label artist under Universal Sigma in May 2013 and the single "Santa Maria" debuted. He made the change in order to work with musicians who did similar things as him.

"Donut Hole" (Denatsu Hru) was his first Vocaloid song in two and a half years, and he performed it on October 28, 2013. On April 23, 2014, Kenshi Yonezu's second album, Yankee, was released, followed by his first concert in his career on June 27. "Eine Kleine," Yonezu's song "Eine Kleine," was written for Tokyo Metro to be used in its 2014 commercial campaign.

With the debut of albums Bremen in 2015 and Bootleg in 2017, Yonezu's popularity soared. Bootleg's hit singles "Uchiage Hanabi," "Loser," "Woser"), and "Peace Sign" were among their year-of-the-Year nominees at the 60th Japan Record Awards, and the campaign brought Yonezu to national prominence.

On December 31, 2018, Yonezu made his live television debut on the 69th NHK Khaku Uta Gassen, the annual year-end extravaganza and one of Japan's most coveted music programs. He appeared on Lemon live from Tokushima, Japan's first time a segment of the Khaku Uta Gassen was broadcast from Tokushima Prefecture. Both Uchiage Hanabi and Paprika were also performed at the festival.

In 2019, Yonezu produced the song "Machigaisagashi" for singer Masaki Suda, earning Best Pop Video at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards Japan. "Uma to Shika" and "Machigaisagashi" ranked fifth and sixth respectively when Billboard Japan revealed its year-end charts. On December 30, Yonezu won the Special Award at the 61st Japan Record Awards, and "Paprika" took home the Grand Prix. Kenshi's international fame extends to Greater China, where he performed his first overseas concerts in China and Taiwan in 2019.

Yonezu co-wrote "Kite" for Japanese boy band Arashi, which served as the theme tune for NHK's coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics. He appeared during Fortnite's Party Royale on August 7, 2020, performing songs from his latest album Stray Sheep (2020), which had only been out two days before. He was one of five finalists of the Special Achievement Award at the 62nd Japan Record Awards in December. With "Kick Back," he performs the opening theme song for the anime Chainsaw Man.
