Since doctors in Washington were unable to diagnose and treat the disease, Washington state has paid just shy of $10 million to settle a case involving a mother-of-two whose cervical cancer became terminal when she was in jail. According to the complaint, Paula Gardner, 42, was serving time for opioid and burglary convictions but did not receive adequate medical attention for more than two years, after testing revealed a growth in her uterus. Ms Gardner's case is the latest in a string of deadly and costly health difficulties in state prisons. 'As a result of DOC's irresponsible, reckless, and grossly negligent conduct and medical negligence,' Paula's lawsuit was filed in Pierce County Superior Court in 2022.' It was too late when she was diagnosed with cancer at the Washington Correction Center for Women in Gig Harbor by the time she was born.
