Kenneth Mars Life

Kenneth Mars (April 4, 1935 to February 12, 2011) was an American actor and voice actor who specialized in comedic roles.

He appeared in two Mel Brooks films as the deranged Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind in The Producers (1968) and Police Inspector Hans Wilhelm Friedrich Kemp in Young Frankenstein (1974).

In 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid and its sequel, the television series, and the Kingdom Hearts series, King Triton, Ariel's father, were all voiced by him.

In addition to this animated voice-over film role, Littlefoot's grandfather in the Land Before Time series and Professor Screweyes in We're Back! In Thumbelina (1994), a Dinosaur's Story (1993) and King Colbert (Prince Cornelius' father).

Early life

Mars was born in Chicago. Bernard "Sonny" Mars, his father, was a radio and television presenter. At Northwestern University, Kenneth studied fine arts and acting.

Personal life

Mars married Barbara Newborn in 1977. Susannah and Rebecca had two children, Susannah and Rebecca. The marriage continued until his death in 2011.

Where Are You? Mars made his acting debut on Car 54 in 1962 as a book publisher. He appeared on such television shows as Gunsmoke, Get Smart, McMillan & Wife, Columbo, Columbo, and The Bob Crane Exhibition later in life. In Warren Beatty's The Parallax View, he appeared in dramatic roles as Will Turner, a former FBI agent.

On the Richard Benjamin-Paula Prentis' 1967 CBS-TV sitcom He & She, Mars played Harry Zarakartos. He appeared in a few small roles in television shows, including the Misfits of Science pilot episode and the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Shadowplay." In Hello Mother, Goodbye!, a 1973 television pilot aired by NBC but never picked up as a series. Mars guest appeared in five episodes of Love, American Style from 1970 to 1974, portraying various characters.

Mars made a series regular appearance on both the Sha Na Na variety series and Norman Lear's talk show parody Fernwood 2-Night in the memorable recurring role of eccentric William W.D. The 'Bud' Award, sponsored by Fernwood's Chamber of Commerce, was given. In 1978, he reprised his role on America 2-Night. Mars portrayed a comedic comedian on Just Shoot Me in 2001, but was a washed-up photographer. Otto, the German dude ranch owner on Fox Broadcasting Company's Malcolm in the Middle, an appearance on Disney Channel's Hannah Montana, and a reprise of his appearance in The Land Before Time television series were his last television appearances.

Mars portrayed a marshal attempting to raise a posse against Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969, only to have his address hijacked by a fellow bicycle salesman. Mars has a tendency to portray characters with exaggerated accents. In What's Up, Doc?, he portrayed German characters in The Producers (1967) and Young Frankenstein (1974), as well as a playing Hugh Simon, a Croatian musicologist. (1972). Sir Evelyn Oakleigh's first heavily accented persona was created during the Cole Porter revival of Anything Goes in 1962. In the 1962 Broadway play The Affair, he appeared also.

ABC/Dunhill produced a comedy LP by Earl Doud, Henry the First's, starring Mars in a number of comedy bits as Henry Kissinger, including a cover version of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Care of Business" in 1975.

Mars began a long career in voice acting, debuting on several characters on Uncle Croc's Block. In The Little Mermaid and Kingdom Hearts II, he performed the roles of Ariel's father, King Triton.

In The Land Before Time film collection and the spin-off television series, he played Grandpa Longneck, and We're Back! The story of a Dinosaur. He appeared on Adventures in Odyssey, a famous radio show. In Fievel's American Tails, he played Sweet William, which took place after An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. He appeared on several animated television shows, including The Smurfs, The Biscuitts, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, TaleSpin, and Animaniacs, as well as video games like Fallout and Kingdom Hearts.

Mars stopped acting in 2008 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago. In the animated television series The Land Before Time, Grandpa Longneck's last appearance was as Grandpa Longneck.
