Kenjon Barner Life

Kenjon Fauter (born April 28, 1989) is an American football running back for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL).

He played for college football at the University of Oregon and received All-American honors.

In the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected him.

Barner has also played for the Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and New England Patriots.

Personal life

Barner was born in Lynwood, California, to parents Gary and Wilhelmenia Barner. He has five older brothers and one older sister. In spring 2012, he earned a degree in criminology. Kenjon has two sons who were born in 2013 and 2017.

Melvin Carter, Barner's cousin, was elected mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota, in November 2017.

High school career

Barner played for the Notre Dame High School football team in Riverside, California, where he competed for the Notre Dame Titans high school football team under head coach Patrick Thompson.

Barner, who was considered a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, was ranked as the No. 1 on the list. In 2008, 38 candidates returned to the country's top candidates.

College career

Barner, a native of Southern California, decided to attend the University of Oregon and compete with head coach Chip Kelly's Oregon Ducks football team. He was ranked by Rivals as the country's best running back prospect, as well as the 86th overall prospect from the state of California. Barner preferred Oregon over scholarship offers from Arizona State and UTEP.

Barner is the first Oregon Duck to score touchdowns, receiving, and from punt and kickoff returns.

Barner had 61 attempts for 366 yards and three rushing touchdowns to go along with 41 kick returns for 1,020 net yards and a 100-yard kick return touchdown against the UCLA Bruins in the 2009 season.

Barner's position on the offense grew in the 2010 season. He had 17 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns against New Mexico in the season's opener, as well as a 60-yard touchdown reception. He had a punt return touchdown in the next game, a victory over Tennessee. Since a helmet-to-helmet clash against Washington State on October 9, he sustained a career-threatening concussion. He had 15 attempts for 133 rushing yards and a touchdown in an annual rivalry game against Oregon State. Barner was the second leading rusher in the Ducks' backfield in the 2011 season. He had 72 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and two receptions for six yards and a receiving touchdown against Arizona on September 24, a touchdown. He had 31 carries for 171 yards and a touchdown against Arizona State on October 15, totalizing 31 yards. In a victory over Colorado, he followed that up with 115 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He had 123 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns against Southern California on November 19. He had 939 passing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns, 17 touchdowns, 184 passing yards, and three touchdowns in the 2011 season.

Barner was considered one of the best running back candidates in the 2012 NFL Draft before he announced his return to Oregon, where he took over LaMichael James as the team's top running back. He was named a top contender for the 2012 Heisman Trophy, which was eventually won by freshman sensation Johnny Manziel.

Barner had 66 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the season opener against Arkansas State. In a victory over Fresno State in the second game, he had 201 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He had 195 passing yards and three running touchdowns against Washington State on September 29, along with three touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. He had 143 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns against Arizona State on October 18. With 321 running yards and three touchdowns against the USC Trojans on November 3, he set a new rushing record for Oregon and the USC Trojans football opponents; he also scored five touchdowns in the game. In a victory over Oregon State, he had 198 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the last game of the season.

With Barner's 143 passing yards and a 24-yard touchdown reception, the Ducks won the 2013 Fiesta Bowl over Kansas State. Barner was named to the AP All-American second team and the All-Pac-12 Conference First-Team following his senior season. He came in ninth place in the 2012 Heisman Trophy voting.

Following the completion of football's spring drills, Barner joined the track team and competed in two meets at 100 meters and in the 4 100 meter relay. He was in third-leg of Oregon's fourth place 4 100 meters relay team at the Pac-10 Championships, where the Oregon won its fourth-straight league title in 40.36 seconds in a season-best time. He ran a career-best time of 10.71 seconds in the 100 meters at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, finishing 14th in the prelims. He came in 3rd in the 200 meters at the 2011 Oregon Relays in a time of 22.29 seconds. At 7.09 seconds, he finished third in the 60 meters at the 2011 Washington Husky Invitational.

Professional career

Barner was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round (182nd overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft on April 27, 2013. Barner played a small part in his rookie year as a member of special teams. He had six attempts for seven yards and two intercepts for seven yards.

Barner was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in August 19, 2014 for a conditional seventh round pick. Barner, his former head coach at the University of Oregon, Chip Kelly, has returned to the job. On August 30, 2014, he was released. He was officially signed to the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad on November 4, 2014.

Barner attempted to make the roster without three former NFL starters, DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews, and Darren Sproles during the 2015 preseason. Barner, who was determined to make a difference in the return game, had a near-resurrection. He punt 92 yards for a touchdown in the first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, putting an end to the second quarter. He punt for a 68-yard touchdown in Baltimore's second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. In the 2015 season, he made the roster and finished with 124 rushing yards and 22 receiving yards.

Barner appeared in 13 games for 129 yards and two touchdowns as a returner on special teams. On December 20, 2016, he was put on injured reserve and was placed on injured reserve.

Barner committed to the Los Angeles Chargers for one year on March 20, 2017. He was released on September 2, 2017.

After suffering an injury to running back Darren Sproles on September 26, 2017, Barner signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barner won by 36 yards on three punt returns, including a 76-yarder in Week 4, earning him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He ended the regular season with 57 passing yards, one rushing touchdown, 56 receiving yards, 10 kick returns for 194 net yards, and 27 punt returns for 240 yards. The Eagles won the NFC East division after 13-13 games. The team reached Super Bowl LII, where they defeated the New England Patriots 41-33, winning their first Super Bowl. Barner had three kick returns for 73 net yards in the game.

Barner joined the Carolina Panthers on May 11, 2018. He was unveiled on August 31, 2018, as part of final roster cuts.

Barner signed with the New England Patriots on September 11, 2018. Barner was released on September 19, 2018, but the Patriots re-signed him a week later after Rex Burkhead was put on injured reserve. Barner was released again on October 4, 2018, four days later, before he was recalled four days later. Barner was fired by the Patriots on November 13, 2018. The Patriots gave Barner a Super Bowl LIII ring on June 13, 2019.

Barner was granted waivers by the Carolina Panthers on November 14, 2018. On December 28, 2018, he was put on the injured reserve. On the 2018 season, he had 19 carries for 71 yards.

Barner signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons on March 14, 2019. In Week 11 of the 2019 season, he had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers, earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Barner signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on August 12, 2020. During the final roster cuts on September 5, 2020, he was cut.

Barner was officially added to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad on September 10, 2020. He was admitted to the active roster for the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers' weeks 3 and 4 games, respectively, and was reverted to the practice squad after each game. On October 6, 2020, he was suspended by the NFL for four games after breaching the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy. On November 3, he was reinstated from suspension and was activated back to the practice squad. Barner was promoted to the active roster for the Week 11 match against the Los Angeles Rams on November 23rd, and he reverted to the practice squad after the game. He was added to the active roster on December 7, 2020. Barner was placed on injured reserve on December 30, 2020, but he was in the midst of a massive shortage. On January 19, 2021, he was scheduled to return from injured reserve and began training with the team again, but the club did not activate him until the end of the season. The Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31–9, winning Barner their third championship ring.

Barner was admitted to the Buccaneers' practice squad on December 15, 2021. He had been released on January 24, 2022, after the Buccaneers were disqualified in the Divisional Round of the 2021 playoffs. On August 15, 2022, he was put on injured reserve. He was released on October 11, 2022.
