Early life
Sampson was born and raised in Houston, Texas, the son of Daphne Smith Sampson and Hoyle Sampson Sr. He is biracial. Sampson was enrolled in music lessons as an infant. After he saw a Gap commercial, Sampson expressed an interest in speaking at ten. Sampson was referred to the Kim Terry Studio in Texas after finding an agent. He began acting in theatre productions while attending Elkins High School. Sampson is a devout Christian.
Career
Sampson appeared in two episodes of the ABC Family series Greek in 2008, followed by an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2010. Jesse appeared in the fifth season of The Vampire Diaries in July 2013. Sampson appeared in the role of Dean Iverson in the Fox miniseries Gracepoint in January 2014. Sampson appeared in Hayley Kiyoko's "This Side of Paradise" in November 2014. Sampson shot the pilot for a new ABC series called The Kingmakers in early 2015, but the project wasn't planned. Sampson portrayed Caleb Hapstall in season 2 of ABC's prime time legal drama How to Get Away with Murder, directed by Shonda Rhimes in July 2015. Sampson Studio is Sampson's own production company.
He founded BLD PWR in May 2019 for new growth, liberation, and reform in marginalized groups and American society. Sampson actively participated in and led Black Lives Matter demonstrations in Los Angeles after George Floyd's murder. During the riots, Sampson stated that police officers fired rubber bullets at him and assaulted him. Sampson has called for a one-day strike in Hollywood over Jacob Blake's shooting.
