Ken Dorsey Career

Playing career

Dorsey was never widely known when he first stepped out of high school, but he would eventually become the best quarterback in University of Miami history. He ended up 38–2 as the team's starting quarterback, with 34 games on the track. Dorsey also rewrote the school record book, setting career records for total offense (9,486), passing touchdowns (67), pass attempts (1,153), a game without an interception (193), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (31), and touchdown passes (568), according to a game (5). He coached the Hurricanes to back BCS National Championship game appearances, including winning the 2002 Rose Bowl and appearing in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

Dorsey, a 2001 BCS National Championship winner, led the Hurricanes to an undefeated 12-0 season, and was named Co-MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl (in which Miami defeated the University of Nebraska) to win the 2001 BCS National Championship. His 2001 Miami team has been dubbed one of the top and most versatile college football squads of all time.

Dorsey was named Offensive Player of the Year twice (2001, 2002), and First-Team All-Big East three times (2000, 2001, 2002). Dorsey was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2001 and 2002, as well as the 2001 Maxwell Award, which is given to the national collegiate player of the year.

Dorsey was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2002 and led the Caneers to their second consecutive undefeated regular season and a national championship game berth in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. In addition, Miami will fall to the Ohio State University Buckeyes in double overtime. Dorsey was successful in the game, with 296 yards, 2 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Miami finished the season 12–1, second behind the Buckeyes, ranking second. Dorsey finished the season with 3,369 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Dorsey was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame for its 45th Annual Induction Banquet on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Jungle Island in Miami.

Despite a solid college career, Dorsey was selected in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, with the 241st overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft, despite questions about Dorsey's arm strength. He appeared in nine games (beginning in seven) and throwing for 1,712 yards and eight touchdowns with 11 interceptions. After the transfer of Rattay to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he began the 2005 season as the third quarterback behind Tim Rattay and #1 pick Alex Smith. Alex Smith, who had to miss three games, was able to start three games. Dorsey led an inspired comeback and was a two-point conversion away from converting the game into overtime in a Week 11 match against the Seattle Seahawks.

After being drafted with the 49ers in May 2006, Dorsey was traded to the Cleveland Browns along with a 7th round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft for veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer. Dorsey and Derek Anderson competed for the second string position behind starter Charlie Frye during training camp. Dorsey continued to serve as the third-string quarterback behind Anderson for all of the 2006 season, despite a virtual tie. Dorsey was the starter for the week 17 game against the Houston Texans, but Charlie Frye had to be recalled just minutes before the game, but he was ruled out of place. As Frye threw an intercept call and no touchdown passes, the Browns continued to lose to the Texans.

Brady Quinn of the University of Notre Dame was the Browns' 22nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Throughout the 2007 NFL Pre-season, Frye, Anderson, Quinn, and Dorsey all fought for position on the Browns' quarterback depth chart. The Browns cut Dorsey on September 1, 2007. After a humiliating loss to Pittsburgh in Week 1, Frye was traded to Seattle and Dorsey was re-signed by the Browns in a reserve position. Derek Anderson had a breakout season in 2007, thereby lowering the chances of Dorsey receiving playing time.

After Derek Anderson was hurt, Dorsey was called to the game against the Indianapolis Colts on November 30, 2008; two passers were incomplete, the other an intercept.

Derek Anderson was put on inactive reserve on December 2 and ended his season. Dorsey was named the starter for the remainder of the 2008 season. During the December 21 game against the Bengals, Dorsey was injured. In week 17 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, fourth string quarterback Bruce Gradkowski took over in place of Dorsey.

The Browns released Dorsey on February 9, 2009.

Dorsey signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on May 26, 2010, where he backed up former Miami Dolphins quarterback Cleo Lemon. Dorsey resigned from professional football on May 3, 2011.

Coaching career

Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach for the Lakewood Ranch Mustangs high school football team in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, for a brief period of time. He was named offensive coordinator at nearby Riverview High School (Sarasota, Florida) on April 26, 2011.

Dorsey was hired by the Carolina Panthers as a pro scout on August 15, 2011. Dorsey, a 2011 offseason, was an IMG employee who coached NFL quarterbacks Cam Newton, Christian Ponder, and Joe Webb, as well as wide receiver Randall Cobb. Dorsey was hired as their quarterbacks coach under head coach Ron Rivera on January 23, 2013. Dorsey and the Panthers reached Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, the first game of the 2015 season. By a score of 24–10, the Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos. After five seasons with the Panthers, Dorsey and offensive coordinator Mike Shula were fired by the Panthers on January 9, 2018.

Dorsey was hired on March 26, 2018 to serve as the assistant director of athletics for Florida International University's sports program, which began in April 2018. Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback, was quoted as saying, "He'll bring a newness and a spark to FIU." Not only is he a hard worker, but he has a vivacious killer instinct. "He's been a consistent winner over the years."

The Buffalo Bills named Dorsey as their quarterbacks coach under head coach Sean McDermott on February 2, 2019.

Dorsey was apparently approached by numerous NFL franchises, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Detroit Lions, about their open offensive coordinator jobs following the 2020 season. In 2021, the Bills promoted Dorsey to passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Following Daboll's resignation to become the head coach of the New York Giants, Dorsey was promoted to offensive coordinator on February 1, 2022, replacing Brian Daboll.

Dorsey and the Bills won the first two games of the 2022 season in a dominant fashion, he was recognized nationally for an incident involving the Bills' last-second loss to the Miami Dolphins in week 3. Dorsey was caught on camera reacting physically in the coaches' box, slamming his cap, headset, and a Microsoft Surface tablet on the table before the telecast was cut away. Fans, participants, and analysts were outraged by Dorsey's reaction.
