Kem Sokha (born 27 June 1953) is a Cambodian politician and activist who most recently served as the President of the Cambodia National Rescue Party. (CNRP)
He served as the Minority Leader, the top-ranked opposition parliamentarian of the National Assembly from December 2016 to January 2017, and previously as the First Vice President of the National Assembly from August 2014 to October 2015.
He served as Kampong Cham as its Member of Parliament (MP) from 2008 to 2017.
Sokha was the leader of the Human Rights Party, which he founded, from 2007 to 2012. Sokha was arrested and detained in a detention center in Tbong Khmum Province on September 3rd, 2017 under suspicion of treason.
The CNRP was dissolved in November 2017 and 118 of its supporters, including Sokha, were barred from politics for five years.
He was released on bail and then arrested under house arrest on September 10, 2018, more than a year after his capture.

Education
Kem Sokha started studying law at the Royal University of Law and Economics in Phnom Penh in 2018, but he dropped out in his second year before receiving a scholarship to Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) in 1981. He studied at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Chemistry in 1986.
Political career
His political career began in 1993, when he was elected a representative for Takéo Province; at that time, he was a member of Son Sann's Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party. In 1999, he joined the royalist FUNCINPEC and later became a senator. In 2001, he resigned from his Senate seat. He established the Cambodian Center for Human Rights in 2002, but he left the group in 2005 to work in politics. He founded the Human Rights Party, which came third in the 2008 elections.
Kem Sokha is well-known for his weekly town hall meetings at local level around the region. He was the first to host a free and open forum in Cambodia on civic and political rights, as well as socioeconomic and economic growth. Kem Sokha is best known for his nonviolent, politically tolerant approach to democratic and unitarian values. Ordinary Cambodians are often quoted and repeated his words. In July 2013, his slogan "Do Min Do" (literal translation to English: "Change or no change") became the anthem for the Cambodia National Rescue Party's election campaign, which attracted a record number of young people.
Kem was elected First Vice President by the National Assembly with 116 votes on August 26, 2014, the first opposition MP to hold office. Following internal differences with the ruling party, he was voted out of office by a vote of 68–0 on October 30, 2015. After refusing to appear in court for questioning in a prostitution lawsuit against him, Kem was sentenced to five months in jail on September 9, 2016. King Norodom Sihamoni later granted him a royal pardon. Following his promotion, he was officially appointed as Minority Leader. However, the positions of Minority Leader and Majority Leader were officially abolished by the National Assembly on January 31, 2017, following Prime Minister Hun Sen.'s call.
Kem and three other deputies were elected president of the Cambodia National Rescue Party in the country's congress on March 2nd. The party made significant strides in the local elections of June 2017, winning 482 of 1,646 communes under his leadership.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged Kem with "treason and espionage" in September 2017 and for reportedly orchestrating the 2014 Veng Sreng street demonstrations. On September 3, 2017, he was arrested at his house. Hun Sen and other Cambodian government officials pleaded knowingly that Kem is planning to conspire with the United States of America. According to Article 149 of the Criminal Procure Code, Kem's lawyers have pleaded guilty. He was released on bail on September 10, 2018, more than a year after his capture, but he was detained under house arrest. On October 10, 2019, he was released from house arrest, but he is now banned from traveling outside the country or participating in political activities.
