Kelvin Harrison Jr. Career

Career

Harrison was cast in Ender's Game, which was based on the 1985 novel. He was promoted to day-player and performed with actors including Viola Davis, Harrison Ford, and Ben Kingsley. Harrison cites Davis for making him take acting more seriously. He appeared in 12 Years a Slave, but he had a small part in it. Harrison will appear in an episode of WGN America's Underground and the 2016 Roots reborn, both of which were produced in his home state of Louisiana. The actor appeared in Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation in the same year. Harrison was initially reluctant to participate in Roots because it would be his fourth appearance as a slave, and he did not have fond memories of seeing the original as a child. Harrison found out how different the two programs were in retrospect. In the meantime, Harrison earned a supporting role on Fox's Shots Fired as well as a recurring role as Touie Dacey on Crackle's StartUp.

Harrison began the year with a minor supporting role in Dee Rees' Mudbound, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. Later this year, Travis appeared in Trey Edward Shults' 2017 psychological thriller It Comes at Night. As the Earth is dominated by a highly infectious disease plagued species, the film focuses on a family hiding in a forest. The film premiered at the Overlook Film Festival in Timberline Lodge in Oregon on April 29, 2017 and was theatrically released in the United States by A24 on June 9, 2017, earning more than $19 million worldwide. Harrison was praised for his appearance at the Gotham Awards this year, and he was nominated for Breakthrough Actor. He cites the job with giving him a reason to keep his acting career.

Harrison appeared in three films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018, namely Monsters and Men, Assassination Nation & Monster. In Reinaldo Marcus Green's Monsters and Men, Zyrick, a gifted teenage baseball player who is politically awakened after seeing a video of a man murdered by the police, appears in his book Monsters and Men. He has a smaller role in Sam Levinson's Assassination Country as Mason, a friend of the female protagonists, and in Anthony Mandler's Monster, based on Walter Dean Myers' book "The Other Side." Assassination Nation and Monsters and Men were both released in the same year, while Monster signed a Netflix distribution agreement in 2021. He continued his roles as a supporting actor in Jinn and JT LeRoy's dramas.

Harrison appeared in two films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, sociocultural Luce, and psychological thriller The Wolf Hour, both starring Naomi Watts. Harrison, Octavia Spencer and Tim Roth's illustrious role in Julius Onah's Luce, received critical acclaim as the all-star high school athlete and accomplished public speaker born in the United States in war-torn Eritrea. "Harrison's results, both slippery and surgically precise, accents ambiguity in an ingenious manner," Los Angeles Times writer Justin Chang wrote. In a different actor's hands, he has a quality that might have resembled simple self-consciousness. For his role in the film, Harrison was selected for Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards.

In Nabil Elderkin's debut Gully, Harrison played Jesse. On April 27, 2019, the film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and later received a national theatrical release on June 4, 2021. With Waves, a major breakthrough of the year, began on August 30, 2019 and found him reunited with It Comes at Night writer and director Trey Edward Shults. Harrison plays Tyler Williams, a well-known high school senior and competitive wrestler whose life comes to a halt after suffering from a career-ending injury. After their previous collaboration, Shults claimed that he wrote and tailored the role for Harrison. Many commentators applauded Harrison's role in the film, with several others comparing and comparing it to his role in Luce. Eric Kohn of IndieWire said that the two performances pushed him forward as the 'preeminent visage of disgruntled youth's disgruntled teenage life.' The film is known for increasing his international exposure, earning a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination. In the first season of Epix's Godfather of Harlem alongside Forest Whitaker, he closed the year off with a supporting role as musician Teddy Greene.

Harrison came out of his studio debut in Stella Meghie's romance film The Photograph to a male lead in Nisha Ganatra's musical comedy-drama The High Note, in the first half of 2020. David Cliff, a singer-songwriter who appears as the love interest to Dakota Johnson's Maggie, appears in the former. Harrison worked with a vocal coach for 45 minutes a day to expand his repertoire, as well as guitar lessons in preparation for the film and its soundtrack. In Aaron Sorkin's biographical ensemble courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, it came to an end earlier this year, and it's now available in select theaters. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, and Harrison and the rest of the cast were nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Harrison played Christian in Joe Wright's Cyrano, a musical film version of Erica Schmidt's Off-Broadway play Cyrano de Bergerac, which was based on the 1897 Edmond Rostand play Cyrano de Bergerac. Harrison was supposed to appear in the second season of HBO's Euphoria, which would have reunited him with Assassination Nation director Sam Levinson, but the COVID-19 pandemic was postponed due to a conflict schedule.
