Kelly Tripucka Career

Professional career

In the 1981 NBA draft, Tripucka was ranked 12th overall by the Detroit Pistons. He was a prolific scorer, scoring 21.6 points per game, and he was a member of the All-Star team in his rookie year. Tripucka's season was his best as a professional, with a career-best 26.5 points and 4.1 assists per game. Nevertheless, he appeared in only 58 games. Tripucka's third season with the Pistons, he was averaging 21.3 points per game, and he qualified for the All-Star squad for the second time in three seasons. He coached the Pistons to their first playoff appearance since the 1976–77 season, but they were eliminated in five games in the first round. Tripucka played in only 55 games this season and averaged 19.1 points per game. He appeared in all 9 playoff games, but he also helped the Pistons advance to the second round. Tripucka's fifth season, 1985–86, was another fruitful one. He appeared in only one game during the regular season, averaged 20 points per game, and was a part of the Pistons' third straight post-season appearance. However, the Pistons were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

After five years in Detroit, the Pistons traded Tripucka and teammate Kent Benson to the Utah Jazz for Adrian Dantley and future draft picks. Frank Layden, the Tripucka and Jazz coach, didn't get along with each other; at the time, Layden was starting to build the team around John Stockton and Karl Malone's abilities, and Tripucka was furious over his absence from being involved in the offense. During his two seasons with the franchise, he had two lackluster seasons, averaging only 9.1 points per game. Both of those seasons, the Jazz made the playoffs, but he didn't have a huge effect. He would only be involved in two games during the 1988 NBA playoffs.

Mike Brown was traded to the Charlotte Hornets after two miserable seasons with the Jazz (a new expansion team at the time) for Mike Brown. In his first season with the Hornets, he returned to his All-Star form, leading the Hornets with 22.6 points per game. Karl Malone, the Hornets' coach, expressed his love to Layden immediately after Layden resigned as the Jazz's coach, tagging "FRANK" on the heels of his sneakers. Tripucka responded with a "DICK" on the back of his shoes (for then-Hornets coach Dick Harter). Layden and Malone, who Tripucka felt ran him out of Utah, were seen as a jab at the time. In Tripucka's second season with the Hornets, he averaged 15.6 points per game, but the team fell short of their inaugural season's record. Tripucka's third season with the Hornets and tenth overall saw him average career lows of 7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game as he came off the bench.

Tripucka joined French Nationale 1A club CSP Limoges for the 1991–1992 season after struggling to find suitors in the NBA. Tim Legler was fired in February 1992 after being replaced by Tim Legler. He averaged 17.6 points per game in seven league games.
