Kelela Career

Career

Mizanekristos debuted her debut mixtape in November 2012 with two new songs. She later left her career as a telemarketer to fully pursue her musical career. Mizanekristos, who migrated to Los Angeles, became affiliated with Teengirl Fantasy and contributed to the company's 2013 album "EFX," which led to her meeting Prince William from Fade to Mind. Night Slugs, the record label and its sister imprint from London, were introduced to her. She appeared on "Bank Head" in May 2013 and five months later her mixtape Cut 4 Me for free. Harriet Gisbone of The Guardian described the mixtape as "an experiment for the production team, the first time the crew had used vocals on their club tracks." "Go All Night" was included on Saint Heron, a Solange Knowles multi-artist compilation album. The mixtape was heavily influenced by grime music, a common electronic genre in the United Kingdom, and it helped to resurrect the subgenre Rhythm & Grime.

DJ Kitty Cash's Love the Free mixtape on December 11, 2013 featured her song, "The High." Mizanekristos later announced the track on her SoundCloud on February 4, 2014. She appeared on Bok Bok's album "Melba's Call" which was also released on March 5. Mizanekristos announced the debut of her first EP, Hallucinogen, on March 3, 2015, alongside the introduction of the lead single "A Message" and its accompanying music video. On September 2, the second single, "Rewind," was released. The EP covers the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship in reverse chronological order. It contains the previously announced "The High" song.

Mizanekristos appeared on "A Breath Away" from Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition in 2016 and "Scales" from Solange's A Seat at the Table. In February 2017, she participated in the Red Bull Sound Selector's 3 Days in Miami. She appeared on "Submission" with rapper Danny Brown and provided additional vocals on Gorillaz's album Humanz's track "Busted and Blue."

Mizanekristos' debut studio album, Take Me Apart, was released on July 14, 2017. On August 1, it was pre-ordered, as part of the lead single, "LMK." "Frontline," "Waitin," and "Blue Light" were three more singles before the album was released on October 6, 2017. Music critics and journalists alike praised the album, which also appeared on various year-end lists. It was also included in the 2018 edition of the book 1001 Albums You Must Read Before You Die.

Mizanekristos was featured on the Girl Unit remix of the song "WYWD," which served as the lead single from his upcoming album, Song Feeling, on June 13, 2018. Both the two artists appeared together on Cut 4 Me's "Floor Show" and Hallucinogen's "Rewind."

Mizanekristos announced Take Me a_Part, Remixes, a remix album made up of remixes from her debut album, on September 12, 2018 and posted a remix for "LMK" starring Princess Nokia, Junglepussy, Cupcakke, and Ms. Boogie is a Boogie. The album includes contributions from Kaytranada, Rare Essence, Serpentwithfeet, and others. Mizanekristos unveiled Kaytranada's "Waitin" remix as the album's second single on September 26, the album's second single. The album was released on October 5, 2018, marking a year since the release of Take Me Apart.

Mizanekristos' first single in five years was released "Washed Away" on September 13, 2022, with accompanying a music video.
