Early life
Baker was born in Midland, Texas, and raised a Quaker in New Mexico, the daughter of John Seawand Baker, a geologist and educator, and Helene Andree, a French-born woman (née Whitton). She attended Mills High School in Millbrae, California. She graduated in 1968. Allen Knight, her drama instructor, was a central figure in her quest to be a professional actress. She attended the Boston University School of Fine Arts Acting program and spent time at the California Institute of the Arts in the early 1970s. She later obtained a B.A. From UC Berkeley in 1977, she obtained a degree in French.
Personal life
She and her second husband, director/producer Steven Robman, who married in 2003, live in Southern California. She has a son and daughter with her first husband, Donald Camillieri.
Career
Baker began acting in several of Sam Shepard's plays before getting her break in an off-Broadway version of Fool for Love (1983) opposite Ed Harris. For this role, she was nominated for the Obie Award. Louise Shepard, Alan Shepard's wife, was cast in The Right Stuff, a drama film from last year. In 1977 and 1989, she had a dramatic appearance as a prostitute in Street Smart (1987) and as a recovering alcoholic and victim of domestic violence. Baker has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Female for her role in Street Smart, as well as a National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Female nominee.
