Kathryn Hays Career

Life and career

Hays was born Kay Piper in Princeton, Illinois, on July 26, 1934, the only child of Roger and Daisy (Hays) Piper. Hays was raised by her mother, a bookkeeper, and a banker, as well as her stepfather, Arnold Gottlieb, who died soon after she was born.

She grew up in Joliet. She studied at Northwestern University and worked as a model. Kathryn Hays changed her name to Kathryn Hays in 1962 (using her mother's maiden name for her last name).

Hays' first marriage was to Sidney Steinberg in 1957, with whom she had a daughter, Sherri. Hays married actor Glenn Ford in 1966; the pair divorced in 1969. Wolfgang Lieschke, a designer who worked in advertising, was her third husband.

Hays made several appearances on episodic television early in her career. Hays described those appearances in a 2010 interview with We Love Soaps: "It was a wonderful time to begin a career." It was nearly always women when the guest stars on the primetime shows were nearly all female. The running star will be a man. The main storyline would be a very rich role to play."

Hays appeared in the NBC western series The Road West, starring Barry Sullivan, Andrew Prine, Kelly Corcoran, and Glenn Corbett in the 1966–67 television season. She was both Sullivan's wife and Prine's stepmother (though she was only three years old). Chance Reynolds, Corbett's brother, appeared as her sister. Gem, a mute alien capable of taking the pain and the injuries of others and, as a result, healing them, appeared on Star Trek in 1968. Marcus Welby, M.D. Bonanza, and Branded were among their appearances.

Hays appeared in films including Ride Beyond Vengeance (1966) and Counterpoint (1968), as Julie Williams, and in the TV film Yuma (1968). Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit were among her television appearances in later years.

Hays appeared on Broadway many times, including a production of Dames at Sea starring Bernadette Peters.

Kim Sullivan Hughes was cast on CBS's As the World Turns in 1972. She remained with As the World Turns until its final episode on September 17, 2010. Kim's character was a pivotal heroine on the show for more than three decades. Hays was prominently featured in the show's 50th anniversary episode, which aired in April 2006.

Hays appeared on As the World Turns as Leslie Jackson Bauer R.N. #2 on The Guiding Light, ahead of her role on As the World Turns.

She appeared in an episode of The Locher Room, a series of YouTube videos reuniting various soap actors in May 2020.
