Kathryn Elsbeth Erbe (born July 5, 1965) is an American actress known for her role as Detective Alexandra Eames on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, a spin-off of Law & Order, and death row inmate Shirley Bellinger in the HBO series Oz.
Early life
Erbe was born in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Elsbeth and Richard Erbe. Her father is a research geneticist. She graduated from New York University (NYU) in 1989.
Personal life
Erbe was married to actor Terry Kinney, who also starred in Oz, from 1993 until their divorce in 2006. Together they have two children, a daughter, Maeve, and a son, Carson.
Career
Erbe, an undergraduate student at NYU, was cast as Lynn Redgrave's daughter in the comedy Chicken Soup's character. She later became a member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company and appeared in several of their productions, including A Streetcar Named Desire, Curse of the Starving Class, and The Grapes of Wrath, which ran for six months and received the 1990 Tony Award for Best Play. In 1991, Erbe received a Tony Award nomination for her role as Mary in The Speed of Darkness.
Erbe appeared in films including What About Bob?, Stir of Echoes, Rich in Love, and Dream with the Fishes, Love from Ground Zero, and Entropy. In Kiss of Death, she appeared opposite David Caruso. Shirley Bellinger portrayed Shirley Bellinger on HBO's Oz, which included a scene in which she did complete frontal nudity for acclaim. In 1997, she appeared on Homicide: Life on the Street for the tumultuous. Alexandra Eames appeared on the NBC/USA Network series Law & Order: Criminal Intent, from 2001 to early 2010, as Detective Alexandra Eames, alongside Vincent D'Onofrio.
Both Erbe and D'Onofrio were jailed in 2010 in Criminal Intent. For the eight-episode final season of the series, Erbe has returned to reprise Detective Eames, alongside Vincent D'Onofrio, who had already signed up to return as Detective Robert Goren. In guest appearances on Law & Order: The Special Victims Unit, she has reprised her role. Erbe appeared in a Thursday episode of Last Week Tonight parodying her work on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
