Kate Rockwell (born Katherine Rockwell Wilfong, 1984) is an American actress, dancer, and singer.
She is best known for her appearances on Broadway and in the role of Skylar in Bring It On: The Musical in 2011 and Karen Smith in the 2018 musical, Mean Girls, for the latter of which she was nominated for Drama Desk Award and Helen Hayes Award.
Early life and education
Rockwell was born in Connecticut and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is the eldest child born to Charles Wilfong and Linda Warner (née Rockwell). Elizabeth (who goes by "Libet") and William (who goes by "Bear") are two younger siblings.
She graduated from Sycamore High School in 2002. Rockwell was on stage in her first year as Grandma Tzeitel in her high school's staging of Fiddler on the Roof, her first on-stage theatre performance experience. In interviews, she said that this performance made her realize that she wanted to pursue musical theatre as a career. During her time at Sycamore High School in 2002, she co-founded the New Stage Collective, a local Cincinnati theater company (later closed in 2009 due to a lack of funds). In 2006, Rockwell earned a BM in musical theatre and continued to Baldwin Wallace University.
Personal life
When she (as dance captain) was preparing Rockwell for her introduction as a replacement for an injured actor, she met her. They began a friendship in February 2009. In Marblehead, Massachusetts, Rockwell and Howard married on September 8, 2014. Mabel and Bessie, the couple's two dogs, now live in New York City. In October 2022, Rockwell and Howard welcomed their first child.
Career
Rockwell was cast in her first professional production as Philia in Boise, Idaho, under the direction of her former Baldwin Wallace professor Victoria Bussert soon after graduating from college. With Rockwell's role as Philia, the performance was then relocated to the Great Lakes Theater.
Rockwell was one of the final 12 contestants on NBC's Grease: You're the One That I Want!, a televised reality competition designed to cast Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in the Broadway revival of Grease directed by Kathleen Marshall in 2007. She was named "Serious Sandy" and was eventually disqualified, finishing fifth behind Laura Osnes in fifth place.
On May 15, 2008, Rockwell made her Broadway debut as Margot in Legally Blonde, replacing Haven Burton. She then appeared in Legally Blonde's national touring production for three months as a replacement for Margot (after Rhiannon Hansen broke her leg during a performance). Rockwell appeared in the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair in March 2010 and stayed with the production until it was shutting down on June 27, 2010. Rockwell later performed in a national touring production of the musical in the United States.
Rockwell starred as Skylar in the world premiere of Bring It On: The Musical, a musical loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name, in January 2011. She continued to be a member of the touring company through its national tour in 2011 and limited engagement on Broadway from August to December 2012. Rockwell "left the business" for about two years after completing her tenure in Rock of Ages, saying in interviews, "I needed perspective." I needed a change. I wanted to see how it was like to do something else." She spent 18 months in a wine store in the Lower East Side during this period. In 2016, Rockwell reignited her passion for wine and gained a certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, which she then used to earn an advanced diploma. She began to miss performing and the theater world and began auditioning on occasion.
In The Muny's production of Tarzan in the summer of 2014, Rockwell portrayed Jane opposite Nicholas Rodriguez. She returned to The Muny the following summer, starring Belle in the company's production of Beauty and the Beast.
In the fall of 2016, Rockwell appeared in Carousel's regional production as Carrie Pipperidge. Rockwell starred Karen Smith in the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey and written by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin, respectively, beginning in 2017. From October 31, 2017, to December 3, 2017, when Rockwell took the role of Karen Smith, the show had its world premiere as an out-of-town tryout at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. On March 12, 2018, the musical, which is based on the film of the same name, opened on Broadway in New York City on April 8, 2018. Rockwell was given a nomination for the Outstanding Performer in a Visiting Production category (for her role in the D.C. production) and a nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. On March 8, 2020, Rockwell left the show and was replaced by Laura Leigh Turner.
