Karl Davies Life

Karl Davies (born 6 August 1982) is an English actor who appeared in the TV series Kingdom's Lyle Anderson.

In the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, Robert Sugden had previously appeared.

Personal life

Davies enjoyed extreme sports and competed in climbing tournaments aged 14, 15, 15, and 16, but never pursued this further than local competitions at a junior level. He has expressed an obsession with extreme sports, such as snowboarding and skiing. During his time on Emmerdale, he has openly stated that he was refused to participate in these programs. His only real exception to this was when he was invited to go wing walking on a biplane in Inverurie, which he loved.

Davies has admitted that his involvement in Emmerdale has earned him much greater public attention, and that fan reactions have been mixed. He has been insulted and slapped on the street by strangers who have been unable to tell him from the character he portrays. Simultaneously, he has a following amongst gay viewers, and has received a lot of fan mail from male viewers.

Karl Davies Career

Career

In the soap opera Emmerdale, Davies took over Robert Sugden's role. The actor's transformation allowed the character to be fleshed out, and he soon became involved in a slew of controversial plotlines, most involving a long-running rivalry with his adopted brother Andy Sugden. He began to be known for a number of romantic characters, including Donna Windsor, Andy's wife Katie Sugden, and Debbie Dingle, the mother of Andy's daughter.

In 2004, Ben Freeman and Kelvin Fletcher, two of the show's younger male characters, were able to participate in a soap calendar for Now Magazine. Patsy Kensit played Sadie King in the character's last romantic storyline. When Kensit reportedly protested a younger actor's friendship, it caught his attention in the media. In an interview with Leeds Today News, Kensit explained the reasons for the taleline, saying, "But I say he looks like one of James' friends, so boyish and young." But Karl is so cute, and we had a lot of fun shooting those scenes." Producers used the brotherly feud, which dominated much of Davies' time on the show, as the vehicle for a high-profile effort to contend with rival soap EastEnders in the television ratings war and to help Emmerdale become the second most popular soap opera in the United Kingdom. Andy's attempts to murder Robert culminated in his father, Jack Sugden(Clive Hornby), being killed. The goal was to be a success in terms of viewing figures of 7.6 million versus 6.4 million for EastEnders. This was the first time Emmerdale had won such a high rating.

Either Robert, Andy, or local vet Max King would be killed in a fiery road crash for his final and widely circulated storyline.

Davies spent 2006 filming Kingdom, opposite Stephen Fry, Celia Imrie, Hermione Norris, and Tony Slattery, as well as Dolphins producer Terry Jones. It was based on a tale of a solicitor (Fry) living in Norfolk's quiet seaside village. Davies played Lyle Anderson, a trainee solicitor who hopes of escaping Market Shipborough, where the show is based, to work in the city. The first series aired in 2007, and the second appeared in January 2008.

Davies appeared in The Great Game: Afghanistan as a performer in 2010. The performance consisted of 12 separate one-act plays (each by a different author) about Afghanistan. Davies appears in four segments, most often as a soldier, on his tour. Davies appeared in the second series of the fantasy epic Game of Thrones as Alton Lannister in 2011. He appeared in the second series of the BBC1 drama series The Syndicate for the second year.

Davies appeared in two episodes of The Crimson Field drama series set in a field hospital during World War I. Corporal Lawrence Prentiss's character begins to suffer from combat exhaustion and shell shock, and by the time of his second appearance, he is "completely wounded" by war experience. Davies watched surviving footage of shell-shock survivors from the first world war and was struck by their injuries. Davies appeared in a minor role in the disaster film Black Sea, in which his protagonist Captain Robinson (Jude Law) is excluded from his work. Daniel Cawood first appeared in the crime drama Happy Valley in April 2014. In 2016, he appeared in a second series of the drama.
