Karen Kwan Life

Karen Wingyan Kwan Oppegard (born 1 June 1978) is best known as Michelle Kwan's older sister.

Karen is two years older than Michelle and has been an elite figure skater herself. The Kwan sisters began figure skating at the same time and trained and competed against each other for years.

Frank Carroll, a Lake Arrowhead training center, mentored Karen, as Michelle.

Karen's results were never quite as good as Michelle's, but she was known for her long legs and arms, which gave a lyrical look and an elegant touch to her skating.

She had strong triple jumps and good technical spins.

Karen has competed for numerous international skating competitions and also won the bronze medal at the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany.

Karen is 5 foot 8 inches (1.73 m) taller than Michelle.

In 1997, she turned to education to concentrate on school.

She attended Boston University. Kwan has maintained her connection to the sport even though she hasn't competed.

She has worked as a choreographer and is the skating director at the East West Skating Palace in Artesia, California.

The rink is owned and operated by the Kwan family. Kwan earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Boston University in 2000.

Michelle interned with clothing designer Vera Wang (a distant cousin), who is known for creating figure skating costumes and personally designing Michelle's costumes.
