Karen Alexandria Kain (born March 28, 1951) is a Canadian classical dancer and the artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada.
Early training and childhood
Because she felt that ballet would enhance her postural balance, confidence, and discipline, Kain's mother enrolled her daughter in ballet classes. When Kain was in grade 6 (age 11, 1962), the family moved from Ancaster to Erindale Woodlands, Toronto Township, so she could begin training at the National Ballet School of Canada. (The majority of Toronto Township, as well as Erindale Woodlands, is now Mississauga.) She was invited to attend the National Ballet of Canada after graduating in 1969. As a member of Girl Guides of Canada, she was also involved in Girl Guides of Canada activities.
Personal life
Kain has been married since 1983 to Ross Petty, a stage and film actor, and a producer of musical pantomime productions in Canada for over 20 years. Kevin Kain, Kain's brother, is a well-known tropical medicine specialist based in Toronto, Ontario; she has three younger siblings and two nephews, Dylan and Taylor Kain.
Career
Kain became a principal dancer in 1971, appearing in a slew of ballets before being well-known in Canada with the assistance of legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev. She appeared with Ballet National de Marseilles, the Bolshoi Ballet, the London Festival Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, and the Eliot Feld Ballet. During her career, she appeared in many ballets from classical and modern repertoire, including Swan Lake (Erik Bruhn), Giselle, Romeo, and Juliet (John Cranko), Onegin (John Cranko), The Taming of the Shrew (John Cranko), The Taming of the Shrew (John Cranko), Onegin, John Cranko), Nutcracker (Balanchine), A Month in the Country (Fredet Kain and Augustyn's talents came to the public and peers as soon as 1973, when they were awarded prizes at the 1973 Moscow International Ballet Competition.
Kain stopped dancing in 1977, but she revived it in 1981 with the National Ballet of Canada, where she appeared for 15 years. Kain reunited with Frank Augustyn in 1996 to appear in her husband Ross Petty's panto version of Robin Hood at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. In 1997, Kain retired as a professional dancer.
She returned to the National Ballet of Canada in 1998 as part of the senior management staff as a creative associate. In a wrongful dismissal lawsuit, she defended artistic director James Kudelka against principal dancer Kimberley Glasco. She took over Kudelka as artistic director in 2005. In 2021, she resigned from her role as a leader.
Kain was the founding board president of Canada's Dancer Transition Resource Centre. Movement Never Lies, Kain's autobiography, was first published in 1994 by McClelland and Stewart.
