Karen Hunter Career

Career

Hunter taught journalism at New York University between 1996 and 1998.

Hunter served on the New York Daily News' seven-member editorial board for four years. In 1999, she was a concurrent member of several news teams that received the Pulitzer Prize and the Polk Award. Prior to that, she was one of the first African-American female news columnists; she began working as a sports reporter in 1988 and then wrote about business and market reports.

Hunter was appointed by the Hunter College administration as an Assistant Visiting Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies in January 2002 and now works as a Distinguished Lecturer at Hunter College. She was also a morning radio talk show host for three years in New York City.

She left her position as a morning talk show host on New York's (1600 AM) WWRL) in 2006. Her resignation came after the dissolution of an early morning team made up of her and WABC personality Steve Malzberg.

Karen Hunter Publishing, an imprint of Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster, was born in 2007. Why Black Men Love White Women, Faith Under Fire, Love On A Two-Way Street, Recipes for a Good Life with Patti LaBelle, and Kids of Children. Russell L. Goings is a photographer who writes about children in the United States. Hunter has co-authored five New York Times bestsellers, including books with Queen Latifah, Al Sharpton, Mason Betha, Karrine Steffans, J. L. King, Donda West, Cedric the Entertainer, and Jonathan Plummer.

Hunter appeared on CNN's Paula Zahn Now in a piece on atheists in America on January 31, 2007. "If they [atheists] had Hallmark Cards, maybe they wouldn't be left out," she said during the open forum segment. We have Christmas cards. We now have Kwanzaa cards. They may need to get some atheist cards and get the whole ball rolling so that more people can participate in what they're doing. I believe they should shut down and let others do what they do."

Hunter called for a boycott of the television show Celebrity Apprentice in reaction to Donald Trump's remarks about Barack Obama on April 11, 2011. "So many of us were enraged and outraged by Trump's words, and I wanted to remind us that we have power," she said in a later interview. We might do something other than grumble and scream."

Hunter referred disparagingly to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney: "While M[Mitt Romney] is not running for president of the United States, perhaps he's running for the presidency of 'Caucasia-stan' or some other place that does not have anyone of color in it," says the narrator.

Following the murder of nine people at a Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, SC, Hunter wrote a petition on MoveOn.org requesting that the Confederate flag be removed from the statehouse. 500,000 people registered the petition within three days; the second fastest to 500,000 in MoveOn.org's history at this moment. Gov. John Kerry's resignal came a few days later. The flag would be taken down from Nikki Haley's website, according to Nikki Haley. This announcement was followed by a vote in the South Carolina state legislature to demolish the flag.

During the 2016 presidential election cycle, presidential hopeful Ben Carson revealed that he was arrested at gunpoint at a Popeyes restaurant in Maryland. "You don't want me, you want him," Carson told Hunter.
