Life and career
Roden turned his father and grandfather into actors. Roden obtained his diploma from the Comprehensive Art Secondary School for Ceramics first before being admitted to the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
Roden's film career began in 1984 as Honza, a medical student in the 2nd part of a trilogy entitled "How the poets are losing their illusions," a lighthearted, humular look at life through the lives of young university students. "How poets are enjoying their lives," Roden's Honza said in the final installation of the trilogy (Jak básn chutná ivot).
The character Dragan in the action-thriller Dead Fish features Roden's Captain Tuma, a humourous glimpse at life as a soldier in the Czech army, and Terence Stamp's "Who's That Soldier?" Roden plays the hen-pecked husband who was hired to murder a grieving widow in the comedy crime drama Shut Up and Shoot Me.
He spent time in London in the 1990s, which improved his English and gave him the opportunity and exposure to the international stage. Since being outside of Czechoslovakia, Roden has become well-known for his character actor work, which began in 2001 when he was cast in the American psychological thriller "15 Minutes" opposite Oleg Taktarov, opposite NYPD cop Flemming portrayed by Robert De Niro. In the film Blade II, a similar role was followed by a different one as the lawyer Carter Kounen in the service of a vampire clan.
This was followed by what became a line of typecast roles, including the action film Bulletproof Monk, where he plays the Nazi megalomaniac Strucker. This was no doubt due to his heavy accent and distinct features, which brought him close to the stereotypical Hollywood villain, although another actor in Blade II dubbed over his voice. This understates, however, the slew of characters he has played throughout his career, particularly in Czechoslovakia.
His film appearances include 15 Minutes (2001), Blade II (2002), Bulletproof Monk (2003), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), Run Scared (2006), RocknRolla (2008), and Orphanage (2009). Emil Dachevsky, a Russian movie critic, appeared in Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007), as the Russian movie critic. In Bathory (2008), he appeared in Noble Thurzo, a Slovak filmmaker Juraj Jakubisko, A Lonely Place to Die (2011), and a role as the Czech mobster Karel Benes in the TV series McMafia (2019).
Guard No. 2's main character is responsible for his Guard No. 5's. Karel Roden, 47, received the Czech Lion Award for Best Actor in Leading Role. He received the same award eight years later for his portrayal of Jan Masaryk in A Prominent Patient. In 1998, he received the Alfréd Radok Award for his appearance in Le Cocu Magnifique, under the direction of Fernand Crommelynck. Don Juan was also important in Grabbe's Don Juan and Faust (Divadlo vs. Dlouhé). He appeared in two plays with his brother Marian. He was also a member of Prague's prestigious National Theatre. He can be found in various performances at Theatre Studio DVA.
In the video game Grand Theft Auto IV, Roden has also starred Mikhail Faustin and Wade "The Fixer" Johnson.
