Career
LaTocha Scott had been performing with Precise before joining Xscape. Scott's sister Tamika Burruss met Kandi Burruss while attending Tri-Cities performing arts high school in East Point, Georgia. Although the group's time with the band was brief, they began singing together and recruited Tamera Coggins, a fourth member of the trio, though she was only with the band for a short time. Tameka "Tiny" Cottle was summoned to audition for the girls shortly, and Xscape was officially launched soon. The girls were introduced to BET's Teen Summit in 1992, where they later became the group's manager. Jermaine Dupri, who later signed the group to his record label So So Def Recordings, was immediately attracted by it.
On October 12, 1993, the group's debut album, Hummin' Comin', was released in 'Cha.' The album debuted at number seventeen in the United States. Billboard 200 and Number three on the Top R&B Albums chart. It was a critical and commercial success, and it had been rated platinum within a year, with two top ten singles launching two new ones. Xscape released Off the Hook, their second studio album, following their debut album's success, in 1995. The album's success eventually went platinum. Traces of My Lipstick's third and final studio album debuted on the Billboard 200 and at number six on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop album chart; over a million copies were sold in the United States; LaTocha Scott left the band to pursue a solo career after Traces of My Lipstick. The ladies recovered and performed on the Big Momma's House and Hardball soundtracks before going on a hiatus until 2005.
Kandi Burruss did not want to produce an illegal film about Xscape in 2017, but the company didn't want to happen against her and the group's wishes. She called on other band members to inquire about performing on their own. The show was called Xscape: Still Kickin' It and was released as a four-episode miniseries. On November 5, 2017, the show premiered on BravoTV and aired on BravoTV. Before Kandi could return to the group, she wanted an apology from band member Tamika Scott, who said in a 2007 interview that Burruss broke up the organisation by sleeping with their label chief Jermaine Dupri and his father, Michael Mauldin. Kandi wanted an apology for Scott's inaccurate representation of Mauldin, but she and Dupri knew it (though Burruss insists that it wasn't the reason for the group's dissolution). At a concert in Detroit in 2017, Burruss received Scott's apology on stage.
Burruss concentrated on recording and songwriting after Xscape's disbanding. Burruss co-wrote, with Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, three major hit songs for Destiny's Child, "Bills, Bills, Bills," for Destiny's Child, and Pink's "Where You Go" for 1999. All three songs were written by their respective writers, and Burruss' former groupmate Tameka "Tiny" Cottle co-authored "No Scrubs," which was also co-written by Burruss' former groupmate Tameka "Tiny" Cottle.
Kandi released her debut album, Hey Kandi, which spawned the singles "Don't Think I'm Not" and "Cheatin' on Me" in 2000. The Billboard Hot 100's "Don't Think I'm Not" hit number 24. The album did not do as well on the charts as the lead single did, debuting at #72 on the Billboard 200.
In the Rhythm & Soul category, Burruss received the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers' Songwriter of the Year award in 2000. She was the first African-American woman to win the award.
Burruss rewrote and produced the 2009 film "Tardy for the Party" starring Kim Zolciak, a co-star in Real Housewives of Atlanta. Kandi Burruss and her collaborating writer/producer Rodney "Don Vito" Richard filed a lawsuit against Zolciak on March 12, 2013 for the Party's money earned. In the documents submitted, Burruss' solicitor, RHOA castmate Phaedra Parks, alleges that her clients wrote Zolciak and that Zolciak was released and sold the single "without [the] plaintiffs' authorization, license, or consent." Burruss was also seeking a temporary restraining order to stop future appearances of the song and the "destruction of all copies of the defendant's infringe plaintiff's copyrights" on the defendant's infringing single and any other piece of the defendant's copyrights," punitive damages, attorney's fees, and a jury trial. The case was dismissed on October 12, 2013, after the presiding judge found that Burruss did not have enough evidence of copyright violation.
Burruss' first EP, the Fly Above EP, was released on October 29, 2009. Burruss announced in December 2009 that she had signed a contract with Asylum Records after her Capitol Records contract came to a halt. Kandi Koated, her second album, was released in December 2010. Burruss has also teamed up with Atlanta female rapper Rasheeda to create the duo Peach Candy.
Ed Sheeran's album "Shape of You," one of the most popular singles of all time, drew comparisons to "No Scrubs," particularly in the pre-chorus line, "Boy, let's not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and place it on me." Burruss, Cottle, and Briggs were all given co-writing credits on "Shape of You."
Burruss appeared on The Real Housewives of Atlanta in its second season, which began in July 2009, after DeShawn Snow was on the show. She has appeared on every subsequent season of the series, becoming the series' longest-serving cast member. She had recently proposed to her boyfriend A.J. when she first appeared on the show. She was seen on television shows being interested in resurrecting her music career. After Burruss became friends with Zolciak and assisted in recording her single "Tardy for the Party," a feud emerged between her and Nene Leakes. Zolciak and Burruss continued recording music together in the third season, though they clashed over their artistic differences. When the latter two women embarked on a promotional concert tour, a clash between Burruss, Leakes, and Zolciak ensued. Burruss and her partner, Phaedra Parks, and Porsha Williams, forged a friendship with them in later seasons, as well as starring the latter in her production of A Mother's Love, which Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker wrote and produced. A rift was seen between Phaedra and Kandi during her pregnancy with her son Ace, which later led to souring due to unpaid production fees owed to Parks.
Burrus was the second spin-off from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Kandi Factory, in 2012. It was initially intended as a one-time television special, but it eventually became a full season. Burruss and her record labels collaborated to launch undiscovered artists' careers, with a new artist chosen every episode. After Burruss and Tucker's wedding, the two of them appeared in a new spin-off series on Bravo, Kandi's Wedding, which aired for five episodes in June and July 2014 and showed the two getting married. Kandi's wedding received a lot of attention on Bravo, and it dominated NeNe Leakes and Kim Zolciak's latest spin-offs. Kandi's Ski Trip, the third spin-off series on television, was released in 2015. After the conclusion of the seventh season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, this was a three-part special.
Burruss appeared on the second season of Celebrity Big Brother, a reality television contest. During her tenure on the show, she finished fifth in the competition and became a fan favorite. On season 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race, she appeared as a guest judge on "From Farm to Runway," alongside model and actress Amber Valletta, which aired on April 11, 2019.
"Night Angel" was her nickname in 2020 as "Masked Angel" in the third season of The Masked Singer. Burruss had been invited to compete in the first season but were unable to participate due to other commitments. She reconsidered after seeing T-Pain perform and being approached by producers again. Burruss was named the show's first female champion of the season. Burruss first appeared in Bravo's Kandi & the Gang in 2022.
Burruss has appeared on television programs such as Single Ladies, Thicker Than Water: The Tankards, Chef Roblé & Co., and Let's Stay Together. Bedroom Kandi, Burruss' sex toy business, is also owned by the Burruss. Kandi Koated Nights, Burruss and four others began a "sex and friendship" web series on Ustream. In 2018, the program first appeared on television.
