Kabir Bedi (born 16 January 1946) is an Indian film actor.

His career has spanned three continents, including India, the United States, and specifically Italy among other European countries in three media: film, television, and theatre.

He is best known for his appearance in Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story and the frightful Sanjay Verma in the 1980's blockbuster Khoon Bhari Maang.

He is best known in Italy and Europe for his role as the nefarious Gobinda in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, as the pirate Sandokan.

Kabir Bedi is well-known in Italy and is fluent in Italian.

He is based in India and lives in Mumbai.

Early life and education

On January 16, 1946, Kabir Singh Bedi was born in Lahore, Punjab, India, (now in Punjab, Pakistan), into a Punjabi Khatri Sikh family of the Bedi clan, which had dedicated itself to India's fight against British colonialism. He was one of three children. Baba Pyare Lal Singh Bedi, his father, was an author and scholar. Freda Bedi, a British woman who was born in Derby, England, became the first Western woman to attend ordination in Tibetan Buddhism. He was educated at Sherwood College, Nainital, Uttarakhand, and St. Stephen's College, Delhi.

Personal life

Bedi married four times and had three children, Pooja, Siddharth (deceased) and Adam. Protima Bedi, an Odissi dancer, was married to him. Pooja Bedi, the family's daughter, is a magazine/newspaper columnist and former actress. Siddharth's son, who attended Carnegie Mellon University, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and died by suicide in 1997 at the age of 26.

Parveen Babi's relationship with him began as his protima's ended. They never married. Susan Humphreys, a British-born fashion designer, married him later. Adam Bedi, their son, made his Bollywood debut with the thriller Hello?

Bedi married TV and radio host Nikki Bedi in the early 1990s. In 2005, the couple had no children and divorced. Bedi has been in a relationship with British-born Parveen Dusanj, whom he married a day before his 70th birthday.

Bedi is a registered ambassador for the Burma Campaign in Myanmar and supports the anti-government campaign. He is Rotary International South Asia's brand ambassador for the Teach Programme and the Total Literacy Mission in India and South Asia.

Career

Bedi began his career in Indian theatre and then moved to Hindi films. He was one of the first international actors to work in Hindi films and then became a Hollywood actor before becoming a celebrity in Europe.

Bedi has appeared in Shakespeare's Othello, as well as portrayed a historical Indian king in Tughlaq and a self-destructive alcoholic in The Vultures as a stage actor. He appeared in The Far Pavilions, M. M. Kaye's West End musical adaptation, at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London. Bedi played Emperor Shah Jahan in Taj, a play written by John Murrell, a Canadian playwright for the Luminato Festival in Toronto in 2011. This play was recommissioned and embarked on an eight-week multi-city tour of Canada in 2013.

Bedi played the villain's aide Gobinda in the James Bond film Octopussy.

He has appeared in more than 60 Indian films. He starred as Emperor Shah Jahan in the historical epic Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story. Other starring Hindi films include Raj Khosla's Kacche Dhaage, Rakesh Roshan's Khoon Bhari Maang, and Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na.

Bedi produced a film starring Hrithik Roshan (Kites), Govinda (Showman), and Akshay Kumar (Blue). He appeared in Deepa Mehta's film Kamagata Maru as Amitabh Bachchan and John Abraham. In the Tamil film Aravaan, directed by Vasanthabalan, he appeared.

Bedi appeared in Columbia Pictures' The Beast of War, a film about the Russian war in Afghanistan starring Kevin Reynolds, as well as Marco Ponti's highly acclaimed Italian film Andata Ritorno, winner of the David di Donatello Award. Nahapana, a significant ruler of the Western Kshatrapas, appeared in the Telugu historical film Gautamiputra Satakarni in 2017.

Bedi has appeared on American television, in Hallmark's African epic Forbidden Territory, and Ken Follett's On Wings of Eagles and Red Eagle. For NBC, Friar Sands appeared in The Lost Empire. She Wrote, Magnum, P.I., Hunter, Knight Rider, and Highlander: The Series, in Dynasty, Murder.

Sandokan, the saga of a romantic Southeast Asian pirate during British colonial times, was his greatest success in Europe, an Italian-German-French television series that set European television viewing records. On RAI TV, he recently appeared in Un Medico, a prime-time Italian television series.

Bedi appeared in The Bold and the Beautiful, the country's second most watched television program, attracting more than a billion viewers in 149 countries over a year.

Director's Cut, a 13-part special series interviewing India's top directors, was his own cinematic talk show on Indian television. His success on television continued in 2013 with award-winning prime minister and Vandemataram for India's news agencies Headlines Today and Aaj Tak.

Bedi appeared in the Indian Biblical television series 'Bible Ki Kahaniya', both the young and old Abraham.

In 2007, he appeared in Chat, a radio show on RAI Radio2, in the role of Sandokan. In 2012, he hosted a series of Radio One programs titled Women of Gold and Men of Steel in honour of India's industry champions. In 2017, he produced another series in English for Radio One, Ten on Ten, honoring the top ten innovations from India. He also appeared in Best of 2017, the year-end special series.

Bedi is a regular contributor to Indian newspapers, including the Times of India and Tehelka, on political and social issues affecting the country. On Indian national television, he can also debate such topics.

"Today there is a lot of awareness and concern about eye health and care in India, and Sightsavers have led the way to people at large in the region with their achievements in the field of eye care," Bedi was named as the country's new 'brand ambassador' for international development company, Sightsavers.

Bedi has been a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1982 (who are in charge of presenting the Oscar awards). He is also a voting member of the Screen Actors Guild.

He has received numerous film, television, and celebrity awards around Europe and India.

Bedi was knighted by the President of the Italian Republic on June 2nd. He was given the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic's highest civilian award of the Italian Republic, "Cavaliere" (Knight) by the Italian Republic's Order of Merit. He has recently received an Honorary Degree from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
