Julie Benz Career

Career

Benz was told by an acting coach that she would never succeed as an actress at the age of 15. "I remember the instructor telling me that I should not even try acting," Benz says. I also have the report card where she appeared to say, 'You will never be an actor.' Your voice is wretched.' That was the best thing that ever happened to me because I was like, 'I'll show you.' With her figure skating career well established, Benz became involved in local theater and was cast in the play Street Acting. In the Dario Argento/George A. Romero horror film Two Evil Eyes (1990), her first film role was a small speaking role. Hi Honey, I'm Home, a year later, she appeared in the television show Hi Honey, I'm Home! (1991), which was cancelled after two seasons.

Benz studied acting at New York University after graduating from high school in 1990. She moved to Los Angeles after graduating from NYU in 1993. She appeared on Married... with Children, a two-week recap of a 1994 episode of Married... with Children, playing a girl who wanted to lose her virginity to Bud Bundy. Aaron Spelling, an unaired television pilot, appeared in her subsequent roles, as well as Crosstown Traffic. In 1995, she appeared in another unaired television pilot called Empire. Hang Time, High Tide, Step by Step, and Boy Meets World were among her television appearances, as well as a small part in the television series The Barefoot Executive. Her acting career was both active and steady in the 1990s. She was uncredited in Black Sheep and her appearance in Diagnosis: Murder as the best figure skater "Julie" allowed her to display her skating ability. Characters appeared on Sliders and The Single Guy in later television appearances. Christy appeared in the television film Hearts Adrift as well as a lead role in Darkdrive as Julie Falcon.

Benz trained for Buffy Summers in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1996, but she was dissatisfied with Sarah Michelle Gellar's role. In the pilot episode, she was given the small role of the vampire Darla. Her role was so well-received that she was extended to a few more episodes.

Julie played a small part in the film As Good as It Gets (1997), which continued her career and culminated in her appearances in more TV shows including The Big Easy and Fame L.A. She appeared in the short film Eating Las Vegas and the unaired TV pilot Veronica's Video, as well as a small part in the television show A Walton Easter and a small role in the invention of the Abbotts.
