Julian Newman Career

Middle school career

After his father started teaching basketball and teaching history at the academy in the fall of 2012, Newman transferred to Downey Christian School, a small private school in Orlando, Florida, after his father started coaching basketball and teaching history at the academy. He started playing basketball for the middle school team as a fifth grader. But he was promoted to the varsity team after seeing immediate success, scoring as many as 91 points in a game. His squad competed outside of the Florida High School Athletic Association's jurisdiction (FHSAA). Newman, an 11-year-old point guard, stood 4 ft 5 in (1.35 m) and weighed 70 pounds. Despite wearing only the smallest available uniform, he had to tie his jacket to his shorts' shoulders and roll the waistband to keep them from falling off. He averaged 12.4 points, 11 assists, and 4.3 steals per game in his first three starts. While leading the state of Florida in assists, he led Downey Christian to a 21–6 record.

In sixth grade, Newman averaged 17 points per game. Newman appeared in a column on high school sports website MaxPreps on December 19, 2012 titled "Fifth grader debuting for the Florida varsity team." ScoutsFocus, a recruiting website, took a highlight video of Newman on YouTube, earning over 3.5 million views. He was also allowed to appear at halftime during an Orlando Magic NBA game.

According to The Huffington Post, Newman was named "The Best Sixth Grade Basketball Player You've Ever Seen" in December 2013. He was scoring 13.6 points and 10.5 assists per game at the time. "The most marketed 12-year-old basketball player in the country" was named by the Tampa Bay Times in 2014. Any media outlets chastised Newman's career, comparing him to a child actor. Newman made history by becoming the youngest player to reach 1,000 varsity points as a seventh grader in 2015. He played 19.8 points, 10.2 assists, and 3.2 steals per game during the 2014-15 season.
