Julia Duffy Career

Career

She appeared in soap operas such as One Life to Live, The Doctors, and Love of Life. Duffy appeared in the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of Once in a Lifetime in 1978.

She appeared in supporting roles in Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), also known as Night Warning, as well as Cutter's Way (1981). In 1982, she appeared in a first season episode of the television sitcom Cheers. Diane Chambers, the sitcom's female lead, had been considered initially for the role.

In 1983, she appeared in the medieval adventure spoof TV series Wizards and Warriors, which lasted one season on the CBS network.

Duffy appeared in the main cast of the sitcom Newhart in 1983 as the Stratford Inn's self-infatuated, upper-class maid Stephanie Vanderkellen. She made an appearance in the first season of the series as Leslie Vanderkellen, the cousin of then-maid Leslie Vanderkellen. It's definitely her most well-known role, and one in which she appeared for seven seasons. She received Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the role from 1984 to 1990. She has received three Viewers For Quality Television awards and five American Comedy Awards nominations for her role, as well as three Golden Globe nominations. Duffy was pregnant on several episodes of Newhart. She wore baggy clothes and stood behind furniture to hide it. She is still close to Bob Newhart.

Duffy appeared in the sitcom Baby Talk with George Clooney for a brief period of time, but she asked to be released after Clooney walked off the tense set. The new designers accommodated her, allowing her to join the cast of Designing Women in 1991. Baby Talk was then retooled, and Mary Page Keller replaced Duffy, and Duffy was then promoted to Duffy. Delta Burke, the show's breakout actress who was fired after quarries with producers, was essentially replaced by Designing Women. On the program, Duffy appeared as Allison Sugarbaker, Burke, and Dixie Carter's previously unseen cousin. Duffy's tenure on the show's sixth season was among the most highly coveted cast additions, owing to the show's most well-known cast additions of Duffy and Jan Hooks. Despite disagreeing information about her character, she was able to be fired from her position quickly, prompting her to be replaced by Judith Ivey.

Duffy starred Barb Ballantine on the short-lived comedy film The Mommies from 1993 to 1995. On The Drew Carey Show, Duffy portrayed Lindsay Mercer, one of Winfred-Lauder's disappointed buyers and Lord Mercer's ex-wife. Linda Hayfer, a high-school English teacher who looses Drake, appears on Nickelodeon's Drake & Josh as Linda Hayfer, a recurring character. Jason, a boy who goes on a date with Maddie Fitzpatrick, appeared on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody as the wealthy mother of Jason, a boy who goes on a date with Maddie Fitzpatrick (Ashley Tisdale). She appeared on Nickelodeon's True Jackson, VP, as the owner of a stage that LuLu wanted to rent for a brief period.

In 2009, Duffy co-starred with Kelly McGillis in a stage production of The Little Foxes at the Pasadena Playhouse. Richard Chamberlain appeared in 'The Heiress' later at the Playhouse. Duffy appeared on HBO's Looking and Showtime's Shameless, as well as Scream Queens, Key and Peele, and other guest appearances. She appeared in a supporting role opposite Kristen Stewart in the drama film Camp X-Ray in 2014.

Her theater work includes the Broadway debut Once in a Lifetime as well as many regional theater credits. Duffy appeared in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, directed by David Esbjornson, for which she was recognized by the IRNE Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama and a lead in the play Sex and Education at the Laguna Playhouse in the spring of 2016. In an Off-Broadway production of Rancho Viejo directed by Daniel Aukin Playwrights Horizons, Duffy co-starred with Mare Winningham and Mark Blum in December 2016. Duffy's appearance was described as "hilariously withering" by Ben Brantley of The New York Times. Lenny Wolpe, Kelley Curran, and Manoel Felciano, all Broadway veterans, appeared in the ensemble comedy The Outsider at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, directed by David Esbjornson.

In 2018, Duffy wrote the book Bad Auditions, which was published by Smith and Kraus.
