Career

Chela failed a basic drug test (in August 2000) indicating positive for the banned steroid methyltestosterone, and was fined three months in addition to having to forfeit all prize money and ranking points accrued over the previous eight months since testing positive.

He reached the quarterfinals in Salvador in February, defeating Flavio Saretta and David Ferrer before falling to Agust Calleri, 3–6, 3–6. He was ranked in doubles at Via del Mar, collaborating Gastón Gaudio.

He reached the quarterfinals at Acapulco and Indian Wells, but lost to Oscar Hernandez Perez and Roger Federer respectively, but not in the quarterfinals. He also reached the final in doubles in Acapulco, partnering Nicolás Mass; but the Bryan brothers lost, 2–6, 3–6.

Chela defeated Marat Safin 6–7, 6–3, 6–3. In doubles, he also won in doubles, partnering Gastón Gaudio.

He reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, where he lost to Tim Henman, 2–6, 4–6, 4–6. He reached the quarterfinals in Rome, where he and Guillermo Cass lost to the Bryan brothers, as well as in Hamburg, where he also worked with Cas.

He reached his career-high singles ranking of No. 1 on August 9, 2004. 15.

Chela (The Torino) was involved in a controversies during a third-round loss to Lleyton Hewitt in the Australian Open in 2005 when he threatened to spit on Hewitt.

He is one of the Davis Cup's most popular players, winning six victories and four losses, the most important of his victories in April 2006, giving Argentina the third point to over defending champions Croatia in the quarterfinals.

He qualified for his sixth different Masters tournament in Rome in May 2007, as well as his personal best showing, defeating Marc Gicquel, Igor Andreev, and world No. 1. In October, he reached the quarter-finals in Vienna, where he defeated Novak Djokovic, 3–6, 6–7. He also reached the semifinals in doubles, teaming Fernando González.

He reached the semifinals in Buenos Aires in February, but he lost to David Nalbandian, 1–6, 2–6.

He made it to the quarterfinals in Barcelona in April, where he lost to Rafael Nadal, 4–6, 2–6.

Chela participated in most Challenger tournaments in 2009, although he did make it to the quarterfinals in Via del Mar, where he lost to Tommy Robredo 6–0, 3–6, 4–6.

Chela won the US Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston in 2010, beating Sam Query 5–7, 6–3, 6–3, for his first ATP Tour victory in over three years. Chela won in a controversial three-set second-round match in which fellow countryman Eduardo Schwank was banned for using tactics when injured after beating Rajeev Ram in straight sets. Chela then defeated defending champion Lleyton Hewitt and another Argentine Horacio Zeballos in straight sets to advance to the final. Chela won the BCR Open Romania in singles, defeating Pablo Andre in the final 7–5, 6–1, and doubles partnering ukasz Kubot. The singles title was his sixth appearance on the ATP World Tour in his career.

He reached the quarterfinals in Vienna and Santiago, as well as the semifinals in Costa do Sauipe, where he defeated Nicolás Almagro 6–1, 2–6, 4–6. He reached the final in Buenos Aires, where he defeated Almagro 3–6, 6–3, 4–6. In doubles, he reached the semifinals in Santiago, partnering Santiago González.

In April, he reached the final of doubles in Monte Carlo, partnering Bruno Soares, but the Bryan brothers lost, 3–6, 2–6.

He reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, where he lost to Andy Murray, 6–7, 2–6. He reached the semifinals in Kitzbühel in August, where he defeated Albert Montaés 2–6, 4–7.

He achieved his career-best doubles ranking of world No. 61. On June 6, 2011, there were 32 people on the mainland.

He advanced to the third round of the US Open, where he was defeated by young American Donald Young, 7–5, 6–3, 6–3.
