They were signed to Lava Records in March 2017, and a month later, Black Smoke Rising, the band's debut studio EP, was released.

On November 10, 2017, the four songs from Black Smoke Rising and four new songs were released, as well as their second single, "Safari Song." Anthem of the Peaceful Army, the band's debut full-length studio album, debuted on October 19, 2018 and debuted in the Billboard Rock Album charts in the first week after its debut.

"When the Curtain Falls" was the band's first single on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock charts in July 2018.

Formation and early years (2012–2015)

Josh and Jake Kiszka, their younger brother Sam, and Kyle Hauck all formed the band in Frankenmuth, Michigan, in 2012. Kyle Hauck was inspired by a relative's mention of Gretna Van Fleet, a Frankenmuth resident, so their use of the spelling changed was done with her (subsequent) blessing. Van Fleet also stated in a later interview that although the band's music isn't her type, she supports the band and thinks they are really talented. The band recorded three songs, "Cloud Train," "Highway Tune," and "Standing On" at the time. Hauck was forced to leave the band in October 2013 and was replaced as drummer by Danny Wagner, the brothers' good friend. Guitarist Jake Kiszka's first guitar riff for "Highway Tune" was cited as early as 2010, but it was rereleased as a single in March 2017. On February 28, 2014, a live EP was released on February 28, 2014, a one-take and broadcast.

In March 2014, the band "Standing On" was included in 2014 Chevrolet Equinox commercials in the Detroit area. "Standing On" is one of many songs to accompany "By the Riverside," "Cloud Train," "Down to the River," and "Motown Funk No. 88" is one of many others. "Sing in the Rain," "Thunder Stomp," "Occidentalli," and "Written in Gold" were earlier announced, but are now out of print.

The song "Highway Tune" was released as a live performance by the band on the Showtime show Shameless on January 17, 2016. The band's first official single, "Highway Tune," was released on iTunes on March 31, 2017. The song "Highway Tune" was released on iTunes on April 2, 2017. The music video for the song "Highway Tune" was posted on Loudwire exclusively on April 18, 2017. Black Smoke Rising, the band's debut EP, was released on April 21, 2017. Greta Van Fleet, the week's best artist, was announced on April 21, 2017. During May 2017, the band appeared with The Struts.

The band was named Best New Artist at the Loudwire Music Awards in October 2017. On November 10, 2017, the band released From the Fires, an eight-song double EP. In addition to the four tracks from Black Smoke Rising, From the Fires features the new albums "Edge of Shadow" and "Talk on the Street," as well as Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "Meet on the Ledge." The four new songs were recorded at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan, and were produced by Al Sutton and Marlon Young, the same pair who made Black Smoke Rising in September 2017. In October 2017, the band also released "Safari Song" as a single.

On September 7, Greta Van Fleet welcomed fellow Michigan native Bob Seger to the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan (just minutes from their hometown) at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan. In November 2017, the band announced that they would begin recording their first full-length studio album shortly after the release of From the Fires, and that by mid-2018, they would be out in the band's first full album.

The band appeared at Elton John's Academy Award Party on March 4, 2018, at the host's personal request. Onstage for his "Saturday Night's Alright for Combat" and their "You're the One" series, John joined Greta Van Fleet. The band's appearance and wardrobe were more dramatic and flamboyant after the set, according to Elton John. The band's debut on television on "When the Curtain Falls," the band's first single from their forthcoming debut album, on July 26, 2018.

On October 19, 2018, the Peaceful Army's debut album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army, was released. The name of the album "Anthem of the Peaceful Army" was taken from a poem's title, according to Josh Kiszka. It was the most popular album in the United States during its debut week, selling 80,000 copies. It debuted on the Billboard 200 as the third best-selling unit in album equivalent units.

In December 2018, the band was nominated for four Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Best Rock Song for "Black Smoke Rising," and Best Rock Album for From the Fires, the latter of which they were nominated.

In May 2019, a third single, "Lover, Leaver," was released. The band performed "Always There," an outtake from the album, to the soundtrack of A Million Little Pieces.

In an interview with New Musical Express magazine in July 2019, Jake and Sam Kiszka announced that they are working on a new album to debut in the coming year and that their musical style has changed.

The band unveiled "My Way, Soon" on October 9, 2020, along with a music video that was shot, edited, and directed by the band. The song was supposed to appear on their forthcoming second album, which, according to Wagner, was a hazy reminder that we had been shielded by a lot of things, but a lot of people were unaware of a few things." The band announced on December 4, 2020, The Battle at Garden's Gate, the band's second studio album. "Age of Machine" was also announced alongside the announcement. The album was released on April 16, 2021. The band's third album, "Heat Above," was released on February 10, 2021. The band's fourth album, "Broken Bells," was released on March 19, 2021.
