Joshua Earl Phillip Phillips (born March 17, 1984) is an American murderer from Jacksonville, Florida, who was found guilty in July 1999 of murdering 8-year-old Maddie Clifton while he was 14 years old in November 1999.
He is currently serving a life term in prison.
The murder was the subject of national television coverage, including a documentary titled "Why did Josh Kill?" on 48 Hours.
Early life
Phillips was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on March 17, 1984, to Steve and Melissa Phillips. Phillips and Melissa were both afraid of Steve, who was a heroin addict and alcoholic who lived in fear of him. Steve imposed stringent restrictions on his son, became angry if he had other children in the household when he wasn't around, and particularly disliked teenage girls; Melissa said she never understood why her husband disapproved girls; Later, Steve decided to move the family from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, to Florida, is separating Josh from his half-brothers Daniel and Benjie.
Phillips was 14 years old and living with his family in Jacksonville, Florida, in November 1998. Phillips was described as "quiet and friendly" by neighbors. Maddie Clifton's mother, Phillips and her daughter were friends, and she never had any reason to be afraid of him. Prior to the shooting, Phillips had no arrests or traces of violence. His school teacher said he was a popular student who did not stand out, describing him as both amusing and silly.
Life in prison
Phillips completed his General Educational Development in jail, but he was initially told he was too young to do it, and later took college classes by correspondence. Phillips works as a judge, assisting other prisoners with their appeals, and also as a prisoner tutor for prisoners. He also plays guitar in a band and appears in Christian religious services, zazen, and yoga. The prosecution pleaded guilty of Phillips' detention experience during his appeal in 2017. Phillips declined to write a letter of apology to Clifton's family, saying they deserved an apology from him in person because they would not be able to see his sincerity in a letter as of 2008. Clifton's mother later stated that she had no intention in contacting Phillips. Phillips is currently imprisoned in the Taylor Annex as of 2021.
