Josh Bynes Career

Professional career

In the 2011 NFL Draft, Bynes was undrafted. The Baltimore Ravens announced Bynes on July 28, 2011 as an undrafted free agent.

Bynes competed for a roster spot as a reserve linebacker and special teams player against Tavares Gooden, Jason Phillips, Anthony Leon, and Chavis Williams during training camp. In the Ravens' first three preseason games, Bynes got little playing time. In their 21–7 win over the Atlanta Falcons on September 1, 2011, Bynes had the opportunity to participate in the Ravens' preseason finale and had six solo tackles and two sacks. The Baltimore Ravens cut Bynes as part of their final roster cuts on September 3, 2011.

Bynes had many tryouts but no contract offers had been received. After linebackers Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe sustained injuries, the Baltimore Ravens signed Bynes to their practice squad on November 9, 2011. Bynes was called by the Baltimore Ravens to their active roster on November 23, 2011. Bynes made his professional regular season debut against the San Francisco 49ers on November 24, 2011. After Ray Lewis recovered from his toe injury and re-signed him to his practice squad, the Baltimore Ravens officially released him on November 29, 2011. The Baltimore Ravens activated Bynes to their active roster on January 14, 2012, but did not activate him for any games during the playoffs.

The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a one-year, $390,000 exclusive rights contract on April 16, 2012. Bynes was supposed to play for a backup inside linebacker against Brendon Ayanbadejo, Ricky Brown, Darryl Blackstock, and Nigel Carr during training camp. During a goal line scrimmage, Bynes suffered a cracked vertebrae at the start of training camp, and was predicted to miss four or five weeks.

After Ray Lewis tore his triceps and was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the regular season, the Ravens announced Bynes to the active roster on October 17, 2012. Bynes was named a back-up inside linebacker behind Dannell Ellerbe and Jameel McClain after joining the active roster.

During a 34-17 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 16, Bynes made his first appearance and recorded a season-high 13 combined tackles (11 solo) and deflected a pass. After Jameel McClain sustained a spinal cord injury while the Ravens' Week 14's, Bynes was named as the starting linebacker. Bynes finished the 2012 season with 34 combined tackles (19 solo) and a pass deflection in ten games and three starts.

The Baltimore Ravens announced Bynes on April 22, 2013, a one-year exclusive rights contract. After Ray Lewis' retirement and Dannell Ellerbe's departure in a free agency, Bynes was set to begin training camp as a starting inside linebacker. Arthur Brown's role was up for challenge. Along Daryl Smith and outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs, head coach John Harbaugh selected Bynes as a starting inside linebacker to start the regular season.

During a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, he had a season-high nine combined tackles. Bynes was inactive for the Baltimore Steelers' Week 7 loss due to a thigh injury and a finger fungus. The Baltimore Ravens signed Bynes to their practice squad on September 4, 2014.

Following injuries, Bynes was moved from the Ravens' practice squad to the Lions' active roster on September 22, 2014. Bynes was reunited with Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, who was previously the Baltimore Ravens' offensive coordinator. He was subsequently selected as a back-up linebacker for Ashlee Palmer and DeAndre Levy. Bynes made his first career interception off a pass by Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton during a 14–6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on November 16, 2014. He had 22 combined tackles (18 solo), a pass deflection, and an interceptor in 13 games and zero starts in the 2014 NFL season.

The Detroit Lions re-signed Bynes to a two-year, $1.81 million deal, which also includes a signing bonus of $250,000. Bynes tried to be a starting linebacker against Tahir Whitehead and rookie Kyle Van Noy throughout training camp. After DeAndre Levy sustained a hip injury during preparation, head coach Jim Caldwell named Bynes a starting outside linebacker to start the 2015 regular season. He began with Tahir Whitehead and Stephen Tulloch, a middle linebacker. During a 37–34 victory over the Chicago Bears, he had a season-high 11 combined tackles (nine solo) during Week 6. Bynes posted a career-high 82 combined tackles (56 solo), five pass deflections, and was credited with half a dismissal in 16 games and 11 starts in the 2015 season.

Since DeAndre Levy recovered from his injury, Bynes' first training camp was scheduled as a back-up linebacker. The Arizona Cardinals switched from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense. With outside linebackers Haasan Reddick and Deone Bucannon, head coach Steve Wilks named Bynes the starting middle linebacker for the season.

In the Arizona Cardinals' season-opener against the Washington Redskins, he got 11 combined tackles (eight solo) in their 24–6 loss. Before suffering a thumb injury in Week 12, he played 11 games before getting a thumb injury. On November 26, 2018, he was put on injured reserve.
