Mixed martial arts career
Benavidez performed in smaller shows and trained while working as a screen printer in New Mexico before joining Urijah Faber. On a trip to California in January 2007, he hoped to make it a living by fighting MMA. Faber's gym was nowhere to be found, so he headed to one in Roseville in the hopes of finding him. His fighting skills impressed the students and instructors enough (or, in Faber's words: "[he] practically beat the crap out of everyone") to dismiss him to Faber. This was only hours before Benavidez' flight home was scheduled and he had to leave for the airport, but he was unable to meet up with him.
His flight was then cancelled, giving him the opportunity to speak with Faber as he had hoped. Benavidez was impressed enough by Faber to work at his gym's front desk, allowing him to leave New Mexico to come train with him and his team. Benavidez went back to New Mexico, "jammed everything into his car," and then moved to California. Benavidez was given a fight against Norifumi Yamamoto by Japanese MMA-promoter Dream in July 2008 at Dream 5. The match was postponed only days before the match, and Benavidez was matched against Junya Kodo, who was defeated by guillotine choke submission.
