He has played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets.

Career

Valverde made his Major League Baseball debut in 2003 to help when Arizona Diamondbacks closer Matt Mantei was injured. On June 23, 2003, he was named National League Player of the Week. He had 10 saves in 54 appearances last season. In 50.1 innings pitched, his ERA was 2.15 with 71 strikeouts.

Valverde's first pitch, which he had in the major leagues, was thrown by Leo Estrella in September 2003. He scored on Steve Finley's RBI single. He would bat only once more in the remainder of his career, after being suspended in 2008.

Valverde was injured for the majority of the 2004 season, but the team only played in 29 games.

Since replacing Brian Bruney in 2005, he took the Diamondbacks' closer role. In 61 games, he finished the season with a 2.44 ERA and 15 saves.

Valverde had some difficulties in June 2006, and the Tucson Sidewinders, the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate, sent him to the Tucson Sidewinders. In early September, he returned to a more prominent role and pitched well in his return. Valverde finished the 2006 season with a record of two victories, three losses, and an ERA of 5.84 and 18 saves.

Valverde defeated Matt Mantei as the Diamondbacks all-time saves leader, winning his 75th birthday against the Baltimore Orioles on June 23, 2007. Valverde came to Arizona for the 2007 MLB All-Star Game as a closer to Arizona. Valverde, the Diamondbacks closer, was the most active in saves (47) during the 2007 regular season before being traded during the 2007 offseason.

Valverde was selected as one of ten finalists for the Delivery Man of the Year Award on September 25, 2007.

Valverde was traded to the Houston Astros for pitchers Chad Qualls, Juan Gutiérrez, and IF/OF Chris Burke on December 14, 2007.

He had 44 saves in 51 chances, a 6–4 record, 83 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.38 in his first year in Houston. For the second year in a row, he led the NL in saves for the second year in a row, and second in the majors in saves for 2008. "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva's walk up song as Valverde entered the game.

Valverde saved just 25 games in 2009 as a result of a season of injuries. Valverde left the Astros' offer of salary arbitration after the 2009 season, refusing the Astros' offer of compensation arbitration.

Valverde signed a two-year, $14 million deal on January 19, 2010, with a third-year player option for $9 million with the Detroit Tigers. He had an ERA of 0.94 and had a streak of 24 innings, the longest in Tigers history, surpassing Todd Jones, who had his highest record in 2000 at 22 innings.

Valverde, alongside Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera, appeared for the Tigers at the 2010 All-Star Game. He suffered with some nagging injuries after the All-Star break, ending the year with 26 saves and a 3.00 ERA.

Valverde made his 200th career save on May 8, 2011. Valverde was chosen to watch his third All-Star Game, and American League manager Ron Washington selected Valverde to lead the team as the team's closer.

Valverde made his 43rd save of the season on September 11, 2011 overtowing Todd Jones as the Tigers' single-season saves leader. The Tigers' AL Central Division crown was his 45th save of the season on September 16th. He made his 49th straight save on the last day of the regular season, capping off his undefeated regular season. It was his first time save chance since 2010. He received the 2011 Delivery Man of the Year Award and the American League Rolaids Relief Man Award as the best relief pitcher of the regular season. In 2011, he ranked AL pitchers in saves, games (75), and games played (70). He was sixth among all active pitchers in career saves (242) through 2011.

In the 2011 ALDS, he made two saves, the second of which sent the Tigers to the 2011 ALCS. In the Tigers' two ALCS victories, he made one save.

In the 2011 AL Cy Young Award voting, Valverde came in fifth, which was won by teammate Justin Verlander.

The Tigers selected Valverde's 2011 club option on October 28, 2011. After blowing a 2–0 lead against the Boston Red Sox on the first day, he ended his streak, although he won the game after the Tigers defeated 3–2.

Valverde's highest mark since the 2006 season came in the 2012 season, with 35 saves and a 3.4 ERA. His strikeouts per 9 innings pitched rate was a career-low 6.3.

Valverde blew a save against the Oakland Athletics in Game 4 of the 2012 ALDS on October 10, 2012. When Valverde took the field in the ninth, the Tigers held a 3–1 lead entering the ninth. In a game the A's eventually won, 4–3, he gave up three hits in a string before registering a single out.

Valverde blew a 4-0 lead against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS by allowing two runs by Ichiro Suzuki and one by Ral Ibaz. Despite the fact that the Tigers won 6–4 in twelve innings, Phil Coke replaced Valverde as the Tigers' closer for the remainder of the season.

Valverde became a free agent on October 30, 2012.

The Tigers signed Valverde to a minor league deal on April 4, 2013. In Class-A for the Lakeland Flying Tigers, he appeared in three games. The Tigers called him up to the Majors on April 23, which necessitated him to commit to a new Major League contract. In his first game back with the Tigers on April 24, he earned a save.

Despite fans' raving about him in late 2012 and 2013, he left the Tigers with the highest save conversion rate (119-for-130, 91.5%) of any closer in team history.

Valverde signed a minor league contract on February 12, 2014 with an invite to Spring training with the New York Mets. On March 26, he was added to the Mets' 40-man roster.

Valverde lost his first game of the season on May 26, 2014, blowing a 2-1 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates and taking his first loss of the season. Valverde was released by the Mets immediately after the game was ended.

Valverde signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres on January 10, 2015, and was released on April 2nd.

Valverde began a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals on April 29, 2015. Valverde was first released by the Nationals on July 22, 2015. He made ten saves with the Syracuse Chiefs, the Nationals' AAA affiliate. Valverde was banned 80 games for breaching the MLB drug policy on August 14, 2015, after finding stanozolol in a positive fashion on August 14, 2015.

Valverde signed with the Mexican Baseball League's Rieleros de Aguascalientes on April 10, 2017. He was announced on February 9, 2018. He re-signed with the Rieleros on January 25, 2019, after struggling out of the league for the first time due to injuries. Valverde was reinstated on July 11, 2019.

Valverde was one of the players selected to be in the 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot for his last MLB appearance in 2014.
