José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano (Spanish: [xo muxika]; born 20 May 1935) is a Uruguayan politician, former explorer, and farmer who served as Uruguay's 40th president from 2010 to 2015. During the military tyrantship of the 1970s and 1980s, a former guerrilla with the Tupamaros was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years. Mujica, a member of the Broad Front coalition of left-wing parties, served as Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries from 2005 to 2008 and then as Senator afterwards. He won the 2009 presidential election and assumed office as president on March 1st, as the candidate of the Broad Front. He was Uruguay's Second Gentleman from September 13, 2017 to March 2020, when his wife Lucia Topolansky served as vice president under his immediate predecessor and successor, Tabaré Vázquez.
Due to his austere lifestyle and his contribution of 90 percent of his $12,000 per month to charities that support homeless people and small entrepreneurs, he has been dubbed "the world's humblest head of state." Mujica, a vocal critic of capitalism's emphasis on amassing material possessions that do not contribute to human happiness, is often seen riding his 60-year-old bicycle. In 2015, the Times Higher Education called him the "philosopher president," a play on Plato's interpretation of the philosopher king.
Early life
Mujica was born on May 20, 1935, to Demetrio Mujica, a descendant of Spanish Basque ancestry, and Lucy Cordano, the granddaughter of Italian immigrants. When his son was five years old, Mujica's father went bankrupt shortly before his death in 1940. His mother's parents were very poor Italian immigrants from Liguria. Lucy Cordano was born in Carmelo, where her parents had purchased 2 hectares (4.9 acres) in Colonia José to cultivate vineyards. Mujica rode for many clubs in various genres between the ages of 13 and 17. He was also a member of the National Party, where he was close to Enrique Erro.
Personal life
After many years of living together, Mujica married Luca Topolansky, a fellow Tupamaros citizen. They have no children and live on a farm owned by Luca in Montevideo's outskirts, where they grow chrysanthemums for sale, but they have refused to live in the presidential palace or use their employees. Manuela, Manuela's three-legged dog, is also on his farm. Topolansky was briefly president in November 2010 while her husband was on a business delegation to Spain, and Vice President Astori was on a visit to Antarctica. She served in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate before that.
Mujica has attracted worldwide notice for its simple lifestyle. For moving, he has used a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle. The car's value in 2010 was $1,800, far exceeds the entirety of Mujica's annual personal wealth declaration for that year. The Uruguayan newspaper Bsqueda announced in November 2014 that he had been offered 1 million dollars for the car; he said that if he did get 1 million dollars for the car, it would be donated to the homeless through a scheme that he supports.
Mujica is an atheist.
