Jordan James Spence (born 24 May 1990) is an English professional footballer who is currently a free agent.

Predominantly as a right-back, Spence can also operate as a centre-back.

He has represented and captained England at various youth levels.

He has previously played for West Ham United, Leyton Orient, Scunthorpe United, Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons and Ipswich Town.

Jordan Spence Career

Club career

Spence joined West Ham United in 2004. He signed a full-time youth team academy student for the 2006-07 season in April 2006 and made his reserve team debut the same month. At every youth level, he has captained the England national team.

Spence made his West Ham debut on May 9, 2010, defeating Manchester City in 86th minutes. Spence made his West Ham debut on May 15, 2011 in a 3–2 away loss to Wigan Athletic, a game that saw West Ham relegated. Spence signed a new deal with the club following his relegation, keeping him there until 2014.

Spence played in the club's first team on seven occasions in the 2012–13 season, but he spent the bulk of the season in the club's reserve team. Spence made his first appearance of the season in the second round of League Cup on August 28th, 2012, when he came as a replacement for James Tomkins in the late second half of a 4–1 victory over Southampton on October 20. Spence was released at the end of the 2013–14 season after nine years with the club.

He made his professional club debut for Leyton Orient in their FA Cup second round match against Bradford City on November 29, 2008, when signing on loan on November 25th. As he returned to Leyton Orient on January 5, 2009, he seemed to be his only match for the season, but he returned to Orient on January 23rd and stayed until the end of the season. In a 2–1 away loss to Scunthorpe United on January 24, 2009.

Spence made his debut on August 17th, 2009, on a one-month loan with Scunthorpe United, defeating Middlesbrough 2–0. Spence's loan at Scunthorpe was extended until January 1, 2010. His loan ended in December 2009 and he returned to West Ham after playing eleven times for Scunthorpe.

Spence signed a 28-day loan for Bristol City, making his first appearance in the 4–1 away win over Coventry City on March 5th. This loan was extended until the 2010–11 season on March 30. Spence was called back by West Ham's manager Avram Grant on May 4 to provide back-up for defenders for the Premier League season.

Spence returned to Bristol City on a season-long loan, with the option for West Ham to recall him from January 2012. Spence's first game after signing on loan for the second time was in the club's first game of the season, a 3–0 loss to Ipswich Town. Spence's playing time was soon reduced under Derek McInnes' leadership, and it was an unused replacement bench for two matches before being left out of the squad for three months. Spence played ten games for Bristol City in April 2012.

Spence took out an emergency loan for Sheffield Wednesday's Championship side. Spence made his Sheffield debut on Wednesday, where he made his first appearance in a 1–1 draw against Middlesbrough on the same day.

Spence played four games for Sheffield Wednesday before returning to West Ham United at the end of September 2013.

On October 24, 2013, Spence joined Milton Keynes Dons on a one-month loan. In a 3–2 loss to Tranmere Rovers on October 26, he made his debut on October 26th. Spence's debut was "wonderful," even though Spence gave up a point. In a 3–1 away loss to Colchester United on November 26, he scored his first goal at club level. Spence returned to West Ham in January 2014 after playing 12 games for Milton Keynes Dons. Spence reinstated Milton Keynes Dons on loan until the 2013–14 season, with the exception of the sarconogyne. Spence's first game after signing for the club on loan for the second time came on February 1, 2014, the same club he played against for the first time. Spence scored for the club for the second time this season in a 3–2 victory over Stevenage on March 22, 2014. Spence played on for twenty-nine appearances and scored two times during the 2013–14 season.

Despite the interest of Championship clubs, Spence joined Milton Keynes Dons on a permanent basis, with the possibility of renewing for another year. Spence's first game since signing for the club on a permanent basis came on August 31, 2014, when the club lost by 2–0 to Crawley Town in the 72nd minute. Spence discovered himself during the 2014–15 season, fighting for a right-back position with Lee Hodson and George Baldock. Despite this, Spence played 38 games for Milton Keynes Dons in the 2014-15 season, winning promotion to the Championship as runners-up. Milton Keynes decided against a contract extension that would guarantee Spence stayed under control for the remainder of the 2015–16 season.

Spence continued to be in the right-back position at the start of the season and recovered his first team position before being suspended for a third round replay of FA Cup. Spence took his first team position in the right-back position after the season's arrival of Baldock. Despite this, Spence made 33 appearances in the 2015-16 season as they were relegated back to League One after a season. Spence was suspended from the club on May 12 after it was announced that his deal would not be renewed.

After being refused for his first trial at the club in the early stages of the 2016–17 season and then being similarly rejected by both Rotherham United and Birmingham City on January 16, 2017, he signed a deal with Ipswich Town until the end of the season. Spence scored his first goal for the club on August 15, 2017, a late header from a free kick to a 4-3 win over Millwall. He was released at the end of the 2018–19 season.

Spence joined ADO Den Haag in January 2020 on a long-term basis until the end of the 2019-20 season. He was released in July after his deal came to an end, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his Eredivise season was over.

International career

Spence led the England U16s to the Victory Shield in November 2005 and then led England U17 to the Final of the Nordic Tournament in August 2006, scoring in his second match. England finished at the top of the competition, but Tórshavn lost the Final to Denmark.

In 2007, he was selected in U17s coach John Peacock's squad for the Elite qualifying round of the Under-17 European Championships against Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Azerbaijan.

Spence captained England in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2007. At this age group, it was the first time the country had reached the World Finals. He scored a late winner, putting England through to the last 16, against Brazil in injury time. It was the first time England had defeated Brazil in a FIFA tournament. In a 2–0 victory over Ghana on November 20, Spence captained the England U18 team. He made his first appearance for the England U19 team in their 6–0 win over Romania on October 14, 2007. Spence's captaincy led the team to an end in 2007, with a 2–0 win over Austria on April 16, 2008.

Spence continued to play with the England under-19 team in the summer of 2009, helping them qualify for the UEFA U19 Championships, in which they finished runners up. Spence made his England U21 debut in March 2011, defeating Iceland 2–1.
