Jordan Armand Matthews (born July 16, 1992) is an American football wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. (NFL).

In the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he played college football at Vanderbilt and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Early life and high school

Matthews was born in Madison, Alabama, on July 16, 1992. He lettered in football and basketball at Madison Academy, where he lettered in football and basketball. Matthews led the football team to a 12–1 record as a senior at Madison Academy. Matthews had 181 receptions, 3,218 receiving yards, and 38 touchdowns during his high school football career at Madison Academy.

Matthews was a three-star recruit. As Phillip Lolley, the head of Football External Operations at the time, referred to Matthews during his junior year of high school. Matthews had intended to walk around Auburn until Vanderbilt turned down a bid. After wide receiver prospect and eventual Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby de-committed from Vanderbilt, Matthews received a scholarship offer from Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson on Christmas Eve in 2009. Matthews only received scholarship offers from Vanderbilt, Kansas, Tulane, Arkansas St., and Jacksonville St. Matthews committed to Vanderbilt on December 26, 2009.

Personal life

Matthews is married to Racing Louisville FC soccer player Cheyna Williams, who attended Vanderbilt University before graduating from Florida State University. The couple have two sons together. Matthews is a Christian.

Brenda and Rod Matthews are Matthews' parents. Justin is his brother. Matthews is related to Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, because Rice's cousin is a Rice.

Matthews is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Matthews hosted his second Vanderbilt Legends Charity Softball Game at Vanderbilt's Hawkins Field on July 7, 2018. YWCA and AMEND Together, two groups that combat domestic violence, were given the proceeds from the event. College career

Matthews had 15 receptions for 181 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman at Vanderbilt in 2010. He had 41 receptions for 778 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore in 2011. Matthews was included in the 2012 Biletnikoff Award Watch List. Matthews, a first-team All-SEC pick, was named third-team All-America by Phil Steele and CBSSportsline as a junior in 2012. He had 94 receptions for 1,323 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Matthews was included on both the 2013 Maxwell Award Watch List and the 2013 CFPA Wide Receiver Trophy Watch List. Matthews made his All-SEC selection as a senior in 2013. USA Today, Athlon, CBS Sports Illustrated, and the Associated Press have also named him as a first-team All-American. He set the all-time SEC record for career receptions and career receiving yards during the season. Matthews also qualified for the Biletnikoff Award and received the coveted CFPA Elite Wide Receiver Trophy in 2013. Matthews was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week on November 16, 2013. After recording five receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns in his last college game, he was the MVP of the 2014 BBVA Compass Bowl. With 112 receptions for 1,477 yards and seven touchdowns, he finished the season on the season. In 2013, Matthews' 112 receptions set a new SEC record for the most receptions in a single season. Amari Cooper set a new record by receiving 124 receptions a year later.

Matthews had 262 receptions for 3,759 yards during his undergraduate career, both marks representing SEC and school records. His 24 career touchdowns are also the highest in school history.

Matthews received a bachelor's degree in economics from Vanderbilt.

Professional career

Matthews was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the 42nd overall pick. In order to draft him, the Eagles moved up 12 spots.

Matthews joined the team on May 27, 2014, a four-year contract. In a Week 3 matchup against the Washington Redskins, he scored his first and second touchdowns in his career. In a Monday Night Football matchup against the Carolina Panthers, he passed for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He had 67 catches for 872 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Matthews played against the Atlanta Falcons in his second year in the league. In the 26-24 loss, he had 102 yards on 10 receptions. Matthews had nine receptions for 133 yards and one touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on October 8. Matthews had eight receptions for 159 yards and one touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on December 20. Matthews played in his first multi-touchdown game of the season on January 3, 2016. He had seven receptions for 54 yards and two touchdowns in the 35-31 victory. He had 85 receptions for 997 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

Matthews, a rookie quarterback, was on his third year in the NFL, with a game against the Cleveland Browns. In the 29-10 victory, he had seven receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. Matthew's season opener will be his best game of the season, as he will not be able to pass 100 receiving yards for the second time on the season. In the 29-23 loss, he had a season-high 11 receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on October 30. He had 73 receptions for a career-low 804 yards and a career-low three touchdowns on the season.

In exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby, the Eagles traded Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick to the Buffalo Bills on August 11, 2017.

Matthews made his Buffalo Bills debut on September 10. In the 21–12 victory over the New York Jets, he had two receptions for 61 yards. During a 23–17 triumph over the defending NFC Champions Atlanta Falcons, Matthews scored his first touchdown with the Bills, but he broke his right thumb during the game. He was supposed to miss a month after surgery but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers retaliated three weeks after the injury. He was put on injured reserve on December 5, 2017, after suffering a knee injury. He finished the 2017 season with 25 receptions for 282 yards and one touchdown.

Matthews agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots worth $1 million with $300,000 as a pledge on April 5, 2018. However, he was released by the Patriots with an injury contract after a hamstring injury three days before during training camp on August 1, 2018.

Matthews was recalled by the Philadelphia Eagles on September 19, 2018 to assist with an injury-plagued receiving corps. In Week 4, against the Tennessee Titans, he scored a 56-yard touchdown for his first touchdown on his return to Philadelphia. Matthews finished the season with 20 catches for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as receiving 1 catch for 37 yards and a touchdown in two playoff games.

Matthews and the San Francisco 49ers announced on March 14, 2019 that he had been a one-year deal. During the final roster cuts on August 31, 2019, the 49ers released him. He had resigned on October 3, 2019, but was released on October 26.

On November 11, 2019, Matthews re-signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was suspended on November 25, 2019.

The San Francisco 49ers had signed Matthews on December 11, 2019. Despite the fact that he did not participate in the 49ers playoffs, the 49ers made it to Super Bowl LIV, but the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20.

Matthews was signed to the 49ers' practice squad on November 27, 2020. He was released on December 8, and he re-signed to the practice squad on December 23, 2020. On December 25 and January 2, 2021, he was activated to the active roster for the team's weeks 16, 17 games against the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, and after each game, he returned to the practice squad. Since the season ended on January 11, 2021, his practice squad deal with the team came to an end.

Matthews announced a position change to tight end after playing wide receiver throughout his career up to that point. As part of his new fitness, he shed 30 pounds. On July 31, 2021, he rejoined the 49ers. He was released on August 31, 2021 and recalled to the practice squad the next day. On September 22, he was born in September 22. On October 5, he was recalled. On February 2, 2022, he signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers. Since suffering a torn ACL in practice, he was put on season-ending injured reserve by the 49ers on August 4, 2022.
