Jonathan Ogden Career

College career

Because the Bruins football coaches would encourage him to play in track and field, Ogden opted to enroll at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He helped UCLA win the 1993 Pac-10 Championship and Rose Bowl as a sophomore. With a personal record of 19.42 meters, he later captured the 1996 NCAA Men's Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in the shot put. Ogden had a stellar career with the Bruins football team, beginning as a left tackle for four years. He allowed only two sacks in 23 games during his junior and senior years. Ogden was the UPI Lineman of the Year in 1995 and the Morris Trophy, and he was a unanimous All-American. Ogden's father, an investment banker, told his son that UCLA had contacted UCLA to transfer him from right to left tackle.

Ogden's jersey was retired by UCLA, making him the eighth player in school history to be honoured with this award. In 2006, he was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on December 5, 2012.

Professional career

Ogden was the first overall pick made by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft, the first-ever draft pick made by the Ravens. Ozzie Newsome wanted to select Ogden, but the owner Art Modell wanted to select Lawrence Phillips. Phillips played in three NFL seasons and rushed for a total yardage of 1,453.

He was ranked as a four-time All-Pro and an 11-time Pro Bowler at left tackle, with trips to Hawaii in every season other than his rookie year. Ogden also caught two passes over his career, both for one yard and the other for touchdowns. He also tackled 10 fumbles and finished with 10 tackles. Ogden has a reputation for smiling. Michael Strahan, a former New York Giants DE, chuckled, "He's a joker." "You see him, you think this guy is not strong enough to tackle the mean guys out there in the NFL." Jonathan will break your legs off, and he'd smile...and wave your arm in front of you." Several times, Ogden threw his helmet in rage. He is widely regarded as one of the top tackles to ever play the game.

In 2001, Ogden defeated the New York Giants 34–7 in Super Bowl XXV. Ogden announced his retirement on June 12, 2008, after a 12-year career, many with Baltimore. Ray Lewis and Matt Stover were the only remaining Ravens from the team's inaugural season in Baltimore, with Matt Stover and Ray Lewis as the team's last remaining Ravens. Ogden, a 6'9" player, is tied for second place in the NFL with fellow Raven Jared Gaither and Bengals tackle Dennis Roland as the highest player in the league at the end of his playing career.

At Super Bowl XLVII, Ogden served as the Ravens' honorary captain, winning their second world championship.
