Jon Llewellyn Kyl (born April 25, 1942) is an American politician who served as a United States Senator for Arizona from 1995 to 2013 and again in 2018.

As a Republican, he held both Senate seats at different times, including alongside John McCain in his first term.

Kyl was Senate Minority Whip from 2007 to 2013. Representative John Henry Kyl and Arlene (née Griffith) Kyl, Kyl's son was born and raised in Nebraska and spent some time in Iowa.

He earned his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Arizona.

He served in Phoenix, Arizona, as an attorney and lobbyist before winning the Republican nomination to the United States House of Representatives, where he served from 1987 to 1995.

He was elected to the Senate in 1994 and then remained by wide margins until his resignation in January 2013.

He was named as one of America's Top Senators by Time magazine in 2006.

Kyl was rated by National Journal in 2007 as the fourth most conservative U.S. senator. Senator John Kerry.

He has been a fixture of Republican policy meetings, chairing the Republican Policy Committee (2003–2007) and the Republican Conference (2007).

He became Senate Minority Whip in December 2007.

In February 2011, he was named one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2010 for his persuasive Senate work and announced in February that he did not seek re-election in 2012 and would step down at the end of his third term.

He explicitly denied seeking another term until, if offered, the Vice President Presidency.

After leaving the Senate in 2013, he served as an advocate in private practice and then helped guide Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court in September 2018.

Kyl stated that he would not run for the remainder of the term after the 2020 special election at a press conference accepting his appointment.

Kyl was the first person to return to the Senate via re-election since 1975, when Norris Cotton of New Hampshire was the first person to return to the Senate by appointment.

He resigned from the Senate after December 31, 2018, and Martha McSally, who had been nominated to the position, took his place.

Early life, education and career

Kyl was born in Oakland, Nebraska, and the son of Arlene (née Griffith) and John Henry Kyl, a Nebraska State Teachers College instructor. After moving his family to Bloomfield, Iowa, his father served as a congressman from Iowa. After graduating from high school in 1960, Kyl attended the University of Arizona, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1964, graduating with distinction. Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona, and Kyl are both members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He earned a law degree at the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law in 1966 and served as editor-in-chief of the Arizona Law Review. He was a litigator and lobbyist with Jennings, Strouss & Salmon in Phoenix, Arizona, before entering politics. Prior to running for office, he served as an attorney with the Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver, Colorado.

Kyl is a Presbyterian. Kyl is married to Caryll Collins, with whom he has two children. They also have four grandchildren.
