Jo Marie Payton (born August 3, 1950) is an American actress and singer who appeared on ABC/CBS Family Matters (1989-1998), as Harriette Baines-Winslow, the matriarch of the Winslow family, and also appeared on the ABC/CBS sitcom Family Matters' recurring role.

Payton appeared on Bruce W. Smith's The Proud Family from 2001 to 2005.

In 2005, she received a NAACP Image Award nomination for her role.

During season two of Will & Grace (1999-2000), Payton appeared as the personal assistant to Gregory Hines' character, Ben Doucette (Will Truman's boss).

Early life and education

Jo Marie Payton was born in Miami, Florida, on August 3, 1950. Her family moved to Opa-locka, Florida, sometime in her early teens. Payton attended North Dade Jr./ Sr. High School and then graduated from Miami City Senior High School in 1968. Payton graduated from Albany State University.

Payton is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Southern Shadows, a 1999 jazz album, was released. Payton has been married four times and divorced three times. Chantale France's first marriage was from 1980 to 1987, with whom she has a daughter, Chantale France, born 1984. Payton was married to Rodney Noble from April 17, 1993 to 1998. Landrus Clark married Landrus Clark in 1998, shortly after divorcing, but they divorced in 2004. Payton has been married to Leonard Downs since 2007.

Career

In 1987, Payton's first break came when she was cast as Harriette Winslow, the elevator operator on ABC's Perfect Strangers. Audiences loved her appearance in 1989, when she first appeared on Family Matters. Harriette Winslow of Perfect Strangers played a mother in a middle-class black family in Chicago, Illinois. Payton left Family Matters partway through its final season on December 19, 1997, the pair almost came to blows and had to be physically separated during Payton's penultimate episode. In the show's remaining eight episodes, Harriette Winslow was played by Judyann Elder.

Payton appeared on the Anne Robinson version of The Weakest Link in 2002, and he was the third one to vote out. Payton and her daughter appeared on a Mother's Day episode of Lingo in 2003, fighting fellow TV mom Meredith Baxter and her daughter. Baxter and her daughter received the grand prize. Jo Marie Payton appeared as Suga Mama in The Proud Family Film in 2005. Desperate Housewives, Reba, Girlfriends, Wanda at Large, The Parkers, 7th Heaven, Will & Grace, The Hughleys, 7th Heaven, Silver Spoons, Small Wonder, and The New Odd Couple are among her television credits include Desperate Housewives, The Little Wonder, Moesha.
