Johnny Logan Career

Career

After the main character of the film Johnny Guitar, Logan adopted the stage name Johnny Logan and released his first single in 1978. He first attempted to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979, finishing third in the Irish National Final with the song "Angie." Logan was named Best New Male Artist by readers of The Connaught Telegraph in Ireland.

Logan also entered the Irish National Selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980, with the Shay Healy song "What's Another Year" winning the Irish final on March 9th in Dublin. Logan, the representative of Ireland in the Netherlands, won the Eurovision Song Contest on April 19th. The song became a hit all around Europe and topped the charts in the United Kingdom.

In June, "In London" was released, and "Save Me" soon followed. Both singles failed as a result of confusion among radio stations over which to play. "Give A Little Bit More," a retouch on a recent Cliff Richard album, was a more concerted effort, with only modestly missing the chart. Logan attributes his lack of success in the UK to poor leadership and his inexperience.

Logan's song "Becoming Electric" in early 1983, making the band a comeback in the UK, but the album did not chart. Logan's third studio album Straight From The Heart, which did not chart in 1985, debuted in 1985. In support of the Bradford City Disaster Fund, he coproduced the chart-toppers "You'll Never Walk Alone." Logan rebranded himself as Logan in 1986, the album "Stab in the Back" was also out of favour, but it failed to chart.

Logan made his second attempt at Eurovision in 1987, and his self-penned song "Hold Me Now" represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgium. Logan became the first person to win twice during the competition. "Hold Me Now" became a big European hit and ranked second in the United Kingdom and at number two. Logan also released a cc cover of the song "I'm Not in Love," a Paul Hardcastle sequel and an album Keep Me Now. Logan released "Heartland" in 1988, which became a hit in the Irish charts, but he concentrated on his work in Ireland and Europe from then on.

Logan performed a country version of "Miss You Nights" with Elvis Presley's backing band The Jordanaires in 1990. He wrote and performed Angels Don't Hide, a German television show Blue Blood.

Logan, who performed "Terminal 3" in 1984, reminisces about his participation in the Irish Eurovision Song Contest (which placed in second place), revisited the experience in 1992, "Why Me." The song was the Irish entry into the finals in Sweden. Logan was named the most influential artist in Eurovision history, despite three wins.

In his book The Eurovision Song Contest – A History (all men) explains that Logan is the only lead singer to have performed two winning songs and one of only five writers/composers (all males) to have written/composed two winning songs.

Logan left his handprints in concrete on the Walk of Fame in Rotterdam, Europe's biggest Star Boulevard.

Logan continues to perform and write songs. Fans of the game and the media at large often refer to him as "Mister Eurovision." He has continued his interest in musical theatre, having toured Norway with Which Witch, an opera-musical company that has roots in the region.

At the 50th anniversary concert in Copenhagen, Denmark, "Hold Me Now" was named the third most popular song in Eurovision history in October 2005. Among the 14 finalists, "What's Another Year" was also nominated. Logan has sold more than 3 million copies around the world. "Hold Me Now" is now a multi-millionaire.

Logan has continued to prosper, especially in Scandinavian countries. The Irish Connection's 2007 album, The Irish Connection, went platinum in Denmark, twice platinum in Norway, and gold in Sweden.

He appeared in the Celtic rock opera Excalibur in 2009 and 2010 and has continued to do so in 2011.

Logan was one of the recording artists to appear in the Irish television series The Hit, which was a tribute to Duke Special. Alan Earls and Jamie Wilson's "Rain" from the pitching rooms, he shortlisted the song "Prayin'" by him. For the chart battle against Special, he chose "1969" by Aaron Hackett, he chose "Prayin" from the list. Logan defeated the chart battle with his song charting at number three in the charts, while Special's charted at number five. Logan was back for the final, where he appeared on "Prayin" with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and was runners-up to Finbar Furey.
