Early life

Thomas was born in Los Angeles and his mother died when he was 12 years old. He was later on alternately raised by his aunt and a godmother. Thomas attended public schools, including the Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, during his childhood. Thomas served in the United States Air Force for a short period of time in 1956. Thomas was often "late" and "slovenly" in appearance when stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, according to a superior.
