Sir John Edward Rowles (born 26 March 1947) is a New Zealand singer.

He was most popular in the late 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, and he was best known in New Zealand for his 1970 album "Cheryl Moana Marie," which he had written about his younger sister.

Early years

Rowles was born in Whakatane, New Zealand, and is a member of the Mori. Eddie Hohapata Rowles' father played for the 1938 Mori All Blacks. His mother was European. He was born in Kawerau, New Zealand, and spent a large portion of his childhood in Te Atat South in West Auckland. Rowles' birth name was simply John Rowles, but after his brother of that name died at a young age, he adopted the middle name "Edward."

Rowles is most well-known in New Zealand and Australia, but he has also appeared in the United States, including Las Vegas, Nevada, and Hawaii, where Kimo Wilder McVay's reign reign reignited Rowles. He was best known for his hit, "If I Only Had Time," which debuted at number three on the UK Singles Chart in spring 1968, and remained on the charts for eighteen weeks. This was a cover version of the French song "Je n'aurai pas le temps" with which Michel Fugain had a hit in 1967; he co-wrote the song with Pierre Delano. The song debuted in the Netherlands, peaking at number two, where the Franck Pourcel Orchestra had a minor success with an instrumental version of the song bearing the original French song title. "Hätt ich nur einmal mehr Time" was a German translation of Schlager singer Peter Rubin's "Hätt ich nur einmal mehr Zeit." Nick DeCaro and his orchestra charted in the United States, releasing as the B-side of the single "Caroline, No" in late 1968, achieving the top 100 in early 1969.

With "Hush," Rowles scored another Top 20 hit in the United Kingdom. . . "Not a Word to Mary" was also in 1968. This song also charted in the Netherlands.

"Cheryl Moana Marie" appeared on radio stations in the United States in 1970, but it wasn't until the 1970s, peaking at number 64 in the Billboard Hot 100 and number 78 respectively in early 1971 that the song charted nationally.

He was the star of a 2008 film titled The Secret Life of John Rowles.

Rowles appeared in the 2008 New Zealand film, Second Hand Wedding.

He appeared in Dancing With the Stars, the 2009 New Zealand version. He was partnered with Krystal Stewart. He had to pull out of the game under doctor's orders, but has since recovered.
