Born May 23, 1968, John Ortiz (born May 23, 1968) is an American actor and artistic co-founder of the LAByrinth Theater Company.

He is best known for his antagonist roles in Fast & Furious (2009) and Fast & Furious 6 (2013), as well as Clyde in Jack Goes Boating (2010), which earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. Guajiro in Carlito's Way (1993), Sheriff Eddie Morales in Aliens vs. Prequeem (2007), Javier J. Rivera in American Gangster (2007), Ronnie in the Silver Linings Playbook (2012), and Victor Nieves in Kong (2017).

Personal life

Ortiz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and he is of Puerto Rican descent. He graduated from John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, where he met his wife. Ortiz and his partner Jennifer and son Clemente lived in the city until 2010, when he and his family immigrated to California.

In 1993, John made his film debut as Al Pacino's teenage cousin Guajiro in Carlito's Way. He has appeared in more than 30 films, including El Cantante, Take the Lead, Before Night Falls, Amistad, Ransom, and Narc. His most recent film appearances include those in Michael Mann's Miami Vice as drug lord Jose Yero, Ridley Scott's American Gangster, Russell Crowe's American Gangster as Russell Crowe's Russell Crowe's American Gangster, and Dr. Bumblebee as scientist Dr. Powell.

Among Ortiz's television appearances, he has appeared in Hope Against Hope for HBO, a series regular on Denis Leary's production The Job and CBS's Clubhouse, as well as the NBC cop drama Blue Blood, directed by Brett Ratner.

Ortiz and 13 other Latino actors joined Latino Actors Base in 1992 to give themselves a base to work and a chance to form a tight knit crew. The group is today known as LAByrinth Theatre Company, an award-winning troupe of over 100 artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds and creative fields.

He appeared as Clyde in Bob Glaudini's world premiere of Jack Goes Boating (Drama Desk nomination). He appeared in the world premiere of School of the Americas by Jose Rivera in 2006, a co-production between LAByrinth Theatre Company and The Public Theater. The role of Jesus in Stephen Adly Guirgis' world premiere and José Solo in Guinea Pig Solo by Brett C. Leonard are two other co-productions between LAByrinth and the Public. Other LAByrinth Theater credits include Jesus Hopped the A Train by Stephen Adly Guirgis in London and New York (Drama Desk nomination, Drama League Award), Where's My Money? John Patrick Shanley wrote and directed the book.

Ortiz appeared in the Tropics' winning play Anna in 2003. At José Rivera's Third World Premiership plays The Adoration of the Old Woman The Adoration of the Old Woman Sueo at the MCC Theatre and The Street of the Sun at Mark Taper Forum. He appeared in two New York premieres of Rivera's plays: References to Salvador Dal Make Me Hot at the Public Theater (OBIE Award) and Cloud Tectonics at Playwrights Horizons. Ortiz appeared in The Skin of Our Teeth and De Donde at the National Theatre; the world tours of The Merchant of Venice and The Persians directed by Peter Sellars; and the national tour of A Few Good Men; Pentecost at Yale Repertory Theatre.

He appeared in the Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Fame and Glory, Public Enemies, and Fast & Furious, and Jack Goes Boating, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, was born in January 2009. He appeared on stage in Othello at the Vienna Festival in Summer 2009. He appeared in Stephen Adly Guirgis' The Motherfucker with the Hat at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company beginning in December 2012. He also appeared in the Silver Linings Playbook.
