John Mara Career

Mara joined the Giants in 1991, serving as General Counsel and later as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer until his father's death in 2005, when he assumed the team's presidency.

Under John Mara and Steve Tisch, the Giants have won Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI.

Despite winning two Super Bowls during his tenure as owner, Mara was criticized in the late 2010s and early 2020s for being too loyal to longtime Giants employees.

In September 2021, he was booed by fans while speaking at Eli Manning's number retirement and Ring of Honor ceremony, and didn't address the crowd that November when the team retired Michael Strahan's number.

Mara was also criticized for keeping Dave Gettleman throughout his four-year tenure, and instead allowing Gettleman to retire at the end of the 2021 season.

Mara has served for 15 years on the NFL Competition Committee, which suggests rule and policy changes to all NFL teams. He is the current chairman of the NFL Management Council Executive Committee. Mara, alongside Steve Tisch and Woody Johnson, brought Super Bowl XLVIII to MetLife Stadium in February 2014.

Homer Jones, the 82-year-old inventor of the spike and former New York Giant, dies of lung cancer at the age of 82

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 15, 2023
Homer Jones, the first player to play on a touchdown, died on Wednesday after battling lung cancer. He was 82 years old at the time. With a career average of 22.3 yards per pass, the big-play wideout is still the NFL's all-time leader. Jones played 224 passes for 4,986 yards and 36 touchdowns in 87 games (59 starts) with the Giants (1964-69) and the Cleveland Browns (1970).

The NFL owners are largely in favour of a schedule flex for TNF as a result of a "eight disapproving" vote

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 22, 2023
The NFL owners have reached a compromise on Thursday Night Football's flexible scheduling, which is likely to be a factor in the 2023 season. Despite public criticism of John Mara and Mark Davis' likes of 24-8, NFL insider Adam Schefter overwhelmingly supported the move. Teams will not play on Thursday night more than twice during a season, and only two flexes will be allowed total, mainly through Week 13-17. In the same vein, they can only be flexed once from 2023 to Thursday.

John Mara, a New York Giants co-owner, is "adamantly opposed" to the NFL's flexible scheduling plan

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 29, 2023
Mara, 68, is furious at his NFL teammates for bringing forward a theory that will not only affect fan attendance at games, but also coaches and players in their recovery and readiness for big matchups. 'I am adamantly opposed to doing that,' Mara told The New York Post. 'Flexible scheduling,' as it is, is highly inconsiderate to our season-ticket holders and the fans who crowd our stadiums every week.' Just because they like it does not mean they like it. We can be flexed to Monday night this year, which I think is extremely inconsiderate to our ticket holders. To me, it's just cruel, and I am adamantly opposed to it.'
