Life and career
Madden was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. He was educated at Bristol's Clifton College. Roger Michell, who became a mentor and later a director, was in the same house as him. He began his film career in Britain and graduated with a B.A. from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1970. Literature in England.
He began working in television, including directing Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect 4, episodes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984-1994) and Inspector Morse (1990–1995).
He directed the film Shakespeare in Love (1998), which received the Academy Award for Best Picture and for which he was also named as Best Director. He lost to Steven Spielberg, who penned Saving Private Ryan. At the 49th Berlin International Film Festival, the film also received the Silver Bear.
Madden has since produced Proof (2005), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), and its sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015).
