John Kay (born Joachim Fritz Krauttaelat, 12 April 1944) is a German-born Canadian rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as the frontman of Steppenwolf.
Early life
He was born in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia). Fritz, his father, was born in Absteinen, near Pogegen, on the Memelland, but today Opstainys in Pag'gyai Municipality, Lithuania, was killed a month before Kay was born.
During the evacuation of East Prussia in harsh winter weather, his mother fled with him from the advancing Soviet troops in early 1945. The train got stuck near Arnstadt, which was first occupied by the Americans but then became part of the East German Soviet occupation zone. They crossed the already-fortified border in Hanover, West Germany, in 1949, when they were first introduced in the album "Stepwolf 7." The young Joachim, who had eye problems and could not speak or understand English, was first inspired by and learned about rock 'n' roll music while listening to Little Richard on US Armed Forces radio. When his family immigrated to Toronto in 1958, teachers had a rough time predicting his birth name, so he was called John K instead. They migrated to Buffalo, New York, five years ago.
Personal life
Kay was married to Jutta Maue, who was born in Canada in 1965 while working in a coffeehouse where Kay's band, The Sparrows, were performing. Shawn and her mother have one daughter. The Maue-Kay Foundation, which promotes human rights and the preservation of wildlife and the climate, was founded by the couple.
Kay credited his friendship with Jutta in 2016 as part of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" based on his book "Magic Carpet Ride."
Kay has residences in West Vancouver, British Columbia, and Nashville, Tennessee, as of 2005.
Musical career
Kay began performing in Canada in 1965, when fellow German-born bass player Nick St. Nicholas (born Klaus Kassbaum), and the Sparrows joined a blues rock and folk music band known as The Sparrows, which enjoyed moderate success before moving to California, expanding its repertoire, and renaming the band Steppenwolf in 1967. Kay's Steppenwolf had international success with songs like "Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride," "Monster," "The Pusher"), and "Rock Me."
Kay performed as a solo artist and with Steppenwolf in the late 1970s, and finished Steppenwolf's 40th year of touring in October 2007 with what was supposed to be a last show. However, Kay and Steppenwolf appeared at the three-day HullabaLOU music festival in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 24, 2010.
