John Hodgman Life

John Kellogg Hodgman (born June 3, 1971) is an American writer, comedian, and humorist.

In addition to his published writings, including The Areas of My Expertise, More Information Than You Require, and That Is All, he is best known for his personification of a Mac in Apple's "Get a Mac" advertising campaign, as well as his work as a contributor to Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His writings have appeared in One Story (to which he contributed the debut story "Villanova"), The Paris Review, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, Wired and The New York Times, which has the humor section's editor.

He appears on This American Life and CBC Radio One's Wiretap.

The Areas of My Expertise, a satirical tongue-in-cheek book with virtually no factual information, was released in 2005.

More Information Than You Requirere, his second book, went on sale on October 21, 2008.

That Is All, his third book, went on sale on November 1, 2011.

True Stories from Painful Beaches, a collection of "real life wanderings" about Hodgman's life experiences (especially in Western Massachusetts and coastal Maine), was published on October 24, 2017.

Early life

Hodgman was born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of Eileen (née Callahan), a nurse and educator, and John Francis Hodgman, President and CEO of the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation and a Tufts University professor. He attended Heath School and Brookline High School, where he edited Samizdat, a resistance publication movement launched under the Soviet Union. He hosted the weekly Radio Consuelo show on freeform station WMFO in Medford during his last year of high school.

Hodgman earned a degree in literature at Yale University in 1994, focusing on literary criticism. Hodgman served as a literary agent at Writers House in New York City, where he represented Darin Strauss, Deborah Digges, and actor Bruce Campbell, among other things. Hodgman's book, The Areas of My Expertise, was on display on The Daily Show on November 16, 2005, to promote his book. Host Jon Stewart called the book "very funny" and that the section on hobo names in particular was written with "a certain amount of genius," according to Host Jon Stewart. Hodgman has appeared on the show's web site several times for "resident expert" interview segments, and has been listed as a contributor on the show's web site.

In 2005, Hodgman appeared in They Might Be Giants' They Might Be Giants' They Might Be Giants' DVD/CD, narrating in between songs with dialog he co-wrote with the band. On April 2, 2014, the Deranged Millionaire character appeared on The Daily Show. During the band's live shows in 2005, he narrated a number of Venue Songs-themed setlists, and he has performed with the band since being in possession of The Deranged Millionaire. On the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on December 11, 2009, the Hodgman appeared with They Might Be Giants. The spoken-word portions of "Why Does the Sun Shine?" was performed by Hodgman.

Hodgman appeared on Attack of the Show, a show that aired on G4, in February 2006, to give the host some insight and market his book The Areas of My Expertise. Hodgman retells the tragic tale of the lobster (which he said was actually a tiny, furry, extinct species that had been killed and replaced by the animals we think of as lobsters today) and brought along Jonathan Coulton, a regular Hodgman collaborator and musical director of the Little Gray Book lectures. "Furry Old Lobster" was Coulton's first hit song. Hodgman appeared on Attack of the Show once more on October 18, 2008, to discuss his latest book, More Information Than You Require.

Hodgman appeared in the Apple Inc. Get a Mac a Mac commercial campaign, which ran from May 2006 to 2010. He plays the personification of a PC in the ads alongside his Mac counterpart, played by actor Justin Long. Hodgman, in fact, became a Mac user in 1984. On November 10, 2020, he made a surprise appearance at the 45:27 mark of Apple's virtual "One More Thing" event, where Apple introduced its first Macs based on its own Apple silicon chips on November 10, 2020.

In 2007, Hodgman appeared in the HBO television series Flight of the Conchords' "Bowie" episode. He was the manager of a musical greeting card business who was considering using one of the band's songs for a greeting card.

Hodgman appeared on The Venture Bros. as Dale Hale, an ex-boy detective in therapy following his father's death. Since being a member of the O.S.I. in Season 5, he has made several appearances as O.S.I. Snoopy, an intelligence serviceman, as well as other positions.

Also, Hodgman delivered color commentary on the winners of the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards in September 2009. In August 2010, he reprised his role in the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.

Hodgman was invited to appear on the programme as a continuing support for QI, the BBC's intellectual comedy quiz.
