John Cena Career

Professional wrestling career

Cena, a fan of Hulk Hogan's growing up, moved to California in 1998 and began training to become a professional wrestler the following year at Ultimate Pro Wrestling's (UPW) Ultimate Pro Wrestling's (UPW) Ultimate University, operated by Rick Bassman. He began wrestling in flea markets, and when he was put in a ring role, Cena began using the Prototype, a semi-robotic character. In the Discovery Channel program Inside Pro Wrestling School, certain aspects of his career was chronicled. In April 2000, he wrestled for the UPW until March 2001.

Cena made his official debut on SmackDown on October 10, 2000, while being branded as The Prototype. In a difficult match against Mikey Richardson, which he lost, he was taping. At a SmackDown contest on January 9, 2001, he had another tryout. This time defeating Aaron Aguilera in a dark match at a SmackDown, we were taping in Oakland, California. On March 13, the thirteenth of march was tapping.

Cena began working with the WWF in 2001 and was assigned to its geographically challenged Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). Cena competed under the ring name The Prototype for three months and the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship (with Rico Constantino) for two months during his time there.

Cena began competing on house shows for the WWF, where he fought against Shelton Benjamin and Tommy Dreamer during the early months of 2002. He continued to watch OVW programming until September 25, when he lost to Kenny Brolin in a Loser Leaves OVW match. In a six-man tag team match against Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch, and Sean O'Haire, he would later appear in a one-off appearance at the developmental farm under the ring name Mr. P.

Cena's call-up to the main roster meant that he was part of OVW's now legendary Class of 2002, alongside Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, and Batista, a group that would eventually be referred to as the "OVW 4."

Vince McMahon ordered the entire roster to the ring on June 24 and declared that he wanted them to all have some "ruthless violence" from within themselves, and that one of them would stand out from the rest. On an episode of SmackDown, Cena made his WWE debut on June 27. Kurt Angle responded to an open challenge. He lost by a pinning pair after announcing that he had "ruthless violence," but the team put on a good showing. Billy Kidman, Faarooq, Rikishi, and The Undertaker was congratulated after the match, becoming a fan favorite. He began feuding with Chris Jericho, who Cena defeated him on July 21 at Vengeance.

Cena and Billy Kidman competed in a tag team tournament in October to crown the first WWE Tag Team Champions of the SmackDown series. In the first round of the tournament, the brand lost to Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle. For the first and only time in his WWE career, Cena stormed Kidman, blaming him for their loss. On the October 17 episode of SmackDown!, Cena defeated Kidman but lost to him in a rematch the following week.

Cena starred as Vanilla Ice and performed a freestyle rap on the 2002 Halloween-themed episode of SmackDown! Cena received a new character this week: a rapper who cut promos while rhyming. He took on the name The Doctor of Thuganomics and widened his gimmick to include rapping before his matches, as well as wearing hats and sports jerseys as part of his ring gear. Cena revealed that the gimmick switch to The Doctor of Thuganomics saved his career at the time. The WWE was planning to unleash Cena before this, but the "ruthless cruelty" gimmick was not strong enough. Cena became involved in a freestyle rap session with Rikishi and Rey Mysterio, impressing Stephanie McMahon, resulting in the gimmick's adoption. Cena began using a copy of the 1980s WWF logo, dropping the "F" as his "signature symbol," as well as the slogan "Word Life." Cena and Dawn Marie lost in a mixed tag team match at Rebellion on October 26, defeating Kidman and Torrie Wilson.

Bull Buchananan, a brutal rechristened to B-2 (also written B2 and pronounced "B-Squared"), eventually joined Cena. On the January 2, 2003 episode of SmackDown, B-2 helped Cena defeat Rikishi. Both Cena and B-2 were involved in the Royal Rumble match on January 19, but they were dissatisfied with their attempts. Cena and B-2 failed to win the WWE Tag Team Championship from Los Guerreros, resulting in Cena replacing B-2 with Red Dogg until Red Dogg was sent to the Raw brand in February.

Cena then applied for the WWE Championship, which was won by Brock Lesnar. He entered a top-tier tournament for the first time in history, defeating Eddie Guerrero, The Undertaker, and Chris Benoit, who mocked Cena by wearing a "Toothless Aggression" shirt. Cena failed to win the competition from Lesnar in April 27 at Backlash. On May 18 at Judgment Day, Cena and The F.B.I. (Chuck Palumbo and Johnny Stamboli) defeated Benoit, Rhyno, and Spanky, a combination. Cena began mocking The Undertaker shortly after this, resulting in a match at Vengeance on July 27, which he lost. On the August 7 episode of SmackDown!, he won a rematch, this time with help from A-Train. After Cena and A-Train defeated Undertaker and Orlando Jordan in a tag team match on August 21, the feud came to an end. On the September 11 episode of SmackDown, Cena then entered the United States Championship, but fell short of champion Eddie Guerrero in a Latino Street Fight for the title.

After losing to Kurt Angle at No Mercy on October 19, Cena became a fan-favorite when he joined Angle as a member of his team at Survivor Series, where Cena and Chris Benoit were the survivors. Both men competed in a 20-man tag team on November 27 to win a WWE Championship match. The two guys were the only two males left and eliminated at the same time, resulting in the two being named joint champions. On SmackDown, however, Benoit defeated Cena the following week. On the night, you will face Lesnar in a WWE Championship match.

Cena was a participant in the Royal Rumble match at Royal Rumble on January 25, 2004, but Big Show denied it. Cena defeated Big Show and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match at WrestleMania XX, which Cena lost by submission to Angle on February 15. Cena defeated Big Show to win the United States Championship, his first singles championship in WWE, at WrestleMania on March 14, his first singles title in WWE. On May 16 at Judgment Day, he retained the title against Rene Dupree, and on June 26, he and Rob Van Dam and Booker T were fighting in a deadly four-way match at The Great American Bash, until he was stripped of the title on July 8 of SmackDown. After Angle (the SmackDown General Manager) mistakenly hit Angle in Angle's wheelchair, he was surprised. Cena won the championship back by defeating Booker T in a best of five series that began on August 15 at SummerSlam and culminated on October 3 at No Mercy, only to be renamed as debuting Carlito Caribbean Cool the next week. The two brothers became a feud after losing to Carlito, resulting in Cena being stabbed in the kidney while Jesz' bodyguard, Carlito's bodyguard, kept Cena out of action for a month while filming The Marine. Cena took the United States Championship back from Carlito on the November 18 episode of SmackDown! In a street brawl at Armageddon on December 12, he retained the title against Jesu in a street brawl.

Cena took part in the Royal Rumble match on January 30, 2005, bringing the match and Batista together, until they were both over the top rope at the same time, effectively ending the match, which was then revived and won by Batista. Cena made it to the finals at No Way Out on February 20, where he defeated Kurt Angle for a spot in the WWE Championship next month. The product of the brand's WrestleMania 21 main event match, which started with a feud between WWE Champion John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) and his Cabinet. On the SmackDown episode on March 3, Cena lost the United States Championship to Cabinet member Orlando Jordan in the early stages of the feud. Since JBL interfered and hit Cena with his title belt, he took it to Cena.

On April 3, Cena defeated JBL at WrestleMania 21 for his first world championship. Now with a spinner WWE Championship belt, JBL defended his position as the WWE champion until Cena beat him in a "I Quit" match at Judgment Day on May 22 retain the title.

On the June 6 episode of Raw, Cena was drafted into the WWE, taking his crown with him and becoming the first wrestler chosen in the annual draft lottery. After refusing to participate in the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) roster at the 2005 ECW One Night Stand, Cena immediately fell into a feud with Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff. Cena defeated Christian and Chris Jericho in a triple threat match at Vengeance on June 26, retaining the title. Jericho was hand-picked by Bischoff after Bischoff promised to make Cena's stint on Raw difficult, so he decided not to take Cena's crown from him. Even though Cena was portrayed as the "face" (hero) and Jericho as the "heel") (villain), a large portion of the live audience was cheering Jericho and booing Cena during their matches, most notably on August 21 at SummerSlam as Cena defeated Jericho to keep the title. During Cena's upcoming feud with Kurt Angle, who took over as Bischoff's hand-picked number one contender after Cena defeated Jericho in a You're Fired match on August 22 of Raw, crowds booed him. Cena maintained his wrestling feud with Angle, losing by disqualification on September 18 at Unforgiven, pinning Shawn Michaels in a triple threat match involving Angle at Taboo on Tuesday, and pinning Angle on November 27 at Survivor Series. Cena's feud with Angle culminated in his introduction of the STFU (a step over toehold facelock) as he entered a triple threat submissions only match on the November 28 episode of Raw.

Cena maintained the WWE Championship in the Elimination Chamber match following the demise of Carlito in 2006. Mr. McMahon announced that Edge was winning money in the Bank partnership, a "guaranteed title match against the WWE Champion at a time and location of the owner's choice." Edge was able to pin Cena and win the championship thanks to two quick spears. On January 29, Cena defeated the competition at Royal Rumble on January 29. Cena's fans had mostly cheered Cena over the previous few months, and the crowd began booing Triple H. Cena defeated Triple H at WrestleMania 22 on April 2 to keep the WWE Championship. When he met Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand on June 11, the unpopular crowd of mostly new ECW supporters at the Hammerstein Ballroom erupted. "You can't wrestle," and "Same old shit" were all present in Cena's raucous jeering and chanting. The fans began chanting "You still suck" as the match progressed. After Cena's interference from Edge, the WWE Championship to Van Dam was lost.

Edge defeated Van Dam in a three-way match on July 3rd, reigniting the rivalry between them from earlier in the year. Edge went about retaining the title by questionable means, including losing himself (for which championships do not change hands), and he unveiled his own version of Cena's "custom" title belt, this one with his logo on the spinner. After winning the FU on Edge in Edge's hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a match and a place of Edge's choice: a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match on September 17 at Unforgiven; the event had a stipulation that if Cena lost, he would have rejoined the SmackDown; if not. The brand is a registered trademark of the United Kingdom. On the next night's Raw, Cena returned with his spinner championship belt belt.

Cena was placed in an inter-brand battle to choose the "Champion of Champions" or the most recognizable champion in WWE's three brands after his rivalry with Edge. In a triple threat match at Cyber Sunday, Cena, the World Heavyweight Champion, and the ECW World Champion Big Show were scheduled, with the viewers choosing which one of the three championships would be placed on the line. When Cena first appeared on Raw with Johnny Nitro and Melina, he was also involved in a storyline with non-wrestler Kevin Federline. Federline appeared on Cyber Sunday to face Cena with the World Heavyweight Championship during the match, assisting Booker in retaining his title after entangled on Raw. Federline was involved in a serious physical altercation with Federline on Raw. Federline pinned Cena on the January 1 episode of Raw, with Umaga's help. On January 7, 2007, Cena shocked Umaga to put an end to his undefeated streak and keep the WWE Championship intact. Cena defeated Umaga in a Last Man Standing match at Royal Rumble on January 28, defeating them in a Last Man Standing match to keep the title. Cena and Shawn Michaels defeated Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton), making the Cena team a double champion one night after the Royal Rumble, an impromptu team of Cena and Shawn Michaels defeated Rated-RKO (Edge and Orton) for the World Tag Team Championship. After compelled Michaels to submit to the STF at WrestleMania 23, Cena defeated him to keep the WWE Championship.

Michaels' Cena victory in the second of two 10-team war royals costing them their tag team titles and dissolving the squad. The Hardys (Matt and Jeff) eventually won the tournament and the titles. In a fatal four-way match against Michaels, Orton, and Edge on April 29, Cena retained the WWE Championship against Michaels, Orton, and Edge. The Great Khali then confirmed his intention to run for Cena's championship, threatening and "laying out" all three of the top candidates before assaulting Cena and taking the title belt. Cena became the first person to defeat Khali by submission on May 20 and then by pinfall on June 3 at One Night Stand in a Falls Count Anywhere match. On June 24, Cena retained the WWE Championship in a five-pack match against Bobby Lashley at The Great American Bash and March 22. Randy Orton was voted the top candidate for Cena's championship later this summer, kicking off the historic Cena–Orton rivalry. Orton delivered a series of sneak-attacks leading up to SummerSlam on August 26, including three RKOs to Cena, who retained the championship after the match. On September 16, Orton disqualified after Cena disobeyed the referee's instructions and continued to beat on him in the corner.

Cena demonstrated a legitimate torn pectoral muscle during a match with Mr. Kennedy on the October 1 episode of Raw, showing a true torn pectoral muscle while doing a hip toss. Despite finishing the match and taking part in Orton's scripted assault after the game, surgery the next day revealed that his pectoralis major muscle was completely removed from the bone. It was estimated that this would require six months to a year of rehabilitation at the time. Cena was stripped of the title by Mr. McMahon on the next night's episode of ECW, snapping the longest WWE Championship streak in over 19 years. The surgery was performed by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. In a video update on WWE.com, Dr. Andrews and Cena's physical therapist said he was several weeks ahead of where he was supposed to be in his recovery at that time.

On January 27, 2008, Royal Rumble, Cena made a surprise appearance as the final participant of the eponymous match, defeating Triple H and ending Triple H, with the shot hitting No Way Out defeating WWE Champion Randy Orton in a match that was not awarded the trophy. Cena's WWE Championship match on March 30, defeating Orton in a non-title match with Triple H as special guest referee, making it a triple threat match during which Orton was pinned by Orton. In a First Blood match, Cena defeated JBL on May 18 at Judgment Day and at One Night Stand on June 1 on a First Blood match. On June 29, Cena was unable to regain the WWE Championship from Triple H at Night of Champions. In a New York City Parking Lot Brawl at The Great American Bash on July 20, JBL defeated Cena to bring an end to their feud. Cena won his second World Tag Team Championship with Batista on August 4, defeating Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, but the former champions lost the title the following week. Batista defeated Cena on August 17 at SummerSlam on August 17. On September 7, Cena was one of four contenders for the World Heavyweight Championship at Unforgiven, but Rey Mysterio was recalled after suffering a herniated disc in his neck in his SummerSlam match, which needed surgery. Cena underwent successful surgery to fix the damage.

On November 23, Cena made his in-ring return to Survivor Series, defeating Chris Jericho for his first World Heavyweight Championship. On December 14, he defended his position against Jericho at Armageddon. Cena lost the championship at No Way Out on February 15, 2009, after defeating JBL at the Royal Rumble on January 26, 2009, after losing to Edge, who stabbed Kofi Kingston and took his place in the Elimination Chamber match. On April 5, Cena was rematching for the title at WrestleMania 25 in a triple threat match involving Big Show and wins. In a Last Man Standing match at Backlash on April 26, he lost the championship to Edge due to Big Show's interference, who choked Cena with a spotlight. In a submission match utilizing the STF, Cena defeated Big Show at Judgment Day on May 17 and Extreme Rules on June 7. The Miz challenged him to a match on April 27 of Raw, but Cena was forced to miss due to injury, but Miz continued to do this for the next weeks until Capena defeated him at The Bash on June 28.

Cena qualified for the WWE Championship against Triple H and defending champion Randy Orton in a triple threat match (a rematch from WrestleMania XXIV), but Orton tied him down by Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. On August 23, where Orton used underhanded tactics to hold, the next night on Raw, Cena defeated a clock challenge to win another shot at the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. Cena defeated Orton in a "I Quit" match on September 13, winning his fourth WWE Championship at Breaking Point. Cena competed in the titular competition on January 31, 2010, making it to the final two where he was ruled out by the returning Edge. Cena regained the title at Elimination Chamber on February 21 in the eponymous match, but his reign was cut short after Mr. McMahon ordered him to defend the title immediately against Batista, who was victorious. Cena defeated Batista at WrestleMania XXVI on March 28 for the title and then won a rematch at Extreme Rules on April 25 in a Last Man Standing match. On May 23, Cena defeated Batista for the third time in an "I Quit" match at Over the Limitation, bringing an end to their feud.

Cena was frightened by all eight former contestants of the first season of NXT, with Wade Barrett as their leader on the June 7 episode of Raw during his main event match against CM Punk. This group later referred to itself as The Nexus. At Money in the Bank on July 18, the stable's intervention made him lose the WWE Championship at Fatal 4-Way to Sheamus and a steel cage match against Sheamus. Cena's reaction to the Nexus revealed an alliance with Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Ity, Bret Hart, and Bret Hart, defeating The Nexus at SummerSlam on August 15 with support from returning Daniel Bryan, a former Nexus employee who replaced Khali.

Cena faced Barrett in a Cell on October 3 with the stipulation that if he loses, he will join The Nexus, and if he wins, The Nexus will disband. Barrett reluctantly joined The Nexus after beating Cena. On October 24, Cena and fellow Nexus member David Otunga defeated Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. Barrett was compelled to assist Barrett in a WWE Championship match later that night, but not the title. When Barrett ordered Otunga to lay down and forfeit the titles, the following night on Raw, Cena, and Otunga lost the titles to fellow Nexus members Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel. Cena officiated a match between Barrett and Orton at Survivor Series on November 21, 1991. As a result of the clause, Barrett did not win the championship; Cena would have been "fired" from the WWE; Orton defeated Barrett to keep the title; and Cena was dismissed (kayfabe).

Cena's farewell address came the night after, before Barrett was charged with losing the WWE Championship by interfering in his rematch with Orton. Cena returned to Raw, first as a spectator, but later warned Nexus employees that despite not being employed, he would still destroy Nexus one by one. Cena was recalled by Barrett on December 13 in the hopes that he would meet him on December 19 at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, which Cena defeated.

On the 2011 episode of Raw, Cena returned and met Punk in a match that resulted in a no-match after Cena was struck by the debuting Mason Ryan, who later joined The Nexus. On January 30, Cena defeated the majority of the Nexus players, putting an end to the feud with the stable. He made it to the final five before being disqualified by WWE Champion The Miz, who was not present in the tournament. Cena defeated Miz at WrestleMania XXVII for the WWE Championship on February 20, defeating him in the eponymous match at Elimination Chamber.

Cena responded in rap style to those made by The Rock last week as the new guest host of WrestleMania. Cena was thrust into a WWE Tag Team Championship match that night, teaming with The Miz to defeat Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater to become the new WWE Tag Team Champions. However, their rematch clause was immediately invoked, and Gabriel and Slater claimed the titles back after The Miz assaulted Cena, the longest in the sport's history. Cena and The Rock finally met on Monday of Raw on March 28, where, after a verbal alteration and a brief assault by Alex Riley, Cena assaulted The Rock with the Attitude Adjustment, Cena and The Rock finally met together on the Rock. Cena and Miz defeated Cena and Miz on a double count out at WrestleMania on April 3, but the Miz returned to action and delivered a Rock Bottom on Cena, allowing the Miz to keep the fight. Raw, Cena's first WrestleMania match to be announced one year in advance, with The Rock "screwing" him out of the match. Cena defeated The Miz and John Morrison in a triple threat steel cage brawl match on May 1, winning WWE Champion as a result of Extreme Rules. Cena then defended the title against The Miz on May 22 in an "I Quit" match, and R-Truth at Capitol Punishment on June 19.

Cena started a feud with CM Punk, who was leaving the firm due to the company's resignation after Money in the Bank ended. On July 17 at Money in the Bank, Punk defeated Cena to win the WWE Championship, leaving the bank with the trophy. The match five stars were recognized in Cena's first and only five star match, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Cena fought and defeated Mysterio later that night to become WWE Champion for a record-breaking ninth time on Raw's July 25 episode, only to be interrupted by Punk, who also claimed to be champion. After special guest referee Triple H missed Cena's foot on the rope, Punk defeated Cena at SummerSlam on August 14 in a championship unification match. After Alberto Del Rio, the WWE Champion by cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Punk, Cena became the top contender and defeated Del Rio at Night of Champions on September 18 for his tenth WWE Championship. In a Cell match involving Punk, he lost it back to Del Rio at Hell in a triple threat Hell on October 2nd. Cena lost his rematch with Del Rio at Vengeance on October 23 in a Last Man Standing match due to interference by The Miz and R-Truth. Cena was able to challenge Miz and Truth at Survivor Series on November 20; Cena selected The Rock as his partner, but Cena defeated Miz and Truth, while Cena defeated Miz and Truth at The End.

Cena's feud with Kane began when the artist screamed over Cena's "Rise Above Hate" slogan and announced that Cena would have to embrace the hate to depose The Rock at WrestleMania. On January 29, 2012, Cena defeated Kane and then defeated Kane in an Ambulance match at Elimination Chamber, defeating Kane on a double countout at Royal Rumble and then defeating Kane in an Ambulance match on February 19 at Elimination Chamber. On April 1, Cena took on The Rock in the main tournament, but the match came to an end when Cena attempted the People's Elbow on The Rock, which was countered by a Rock Bottom for the pinfall. Cena accepted his fate on Raw, inviting The Rock to the ring to congratulate him. However, Brock Lesnar, a former wrestler, was able to answer Cena's call, resulting in the F-5 assault on Cena. This culminated in Cena's feud with Raw and SmackDown General Manager John Laurinaitis, who admitted that he recruited Lesnar to bring "legitimacy" to the WWE and to Lesnar's "new star" and the WWE's "new star" was revealed. Cena defeated Lesnar in a Extreme Rules match on April 29, according to Extreme Rules. After interference from the Big Show, he lost his Laurinaitis at Over the Limit on May 20 but No Way Out on June 17, but Laurinaitis was fired after Cena defeated Big Show in a steel cage match with both their jobs on the line.

Cena won the WWE Championship Money in the Bank ladder match on July 15 at Money in the Bank, bringing him a lifetime ban on the WWE Championship. Cena competed in his CM Punk deal on July 23, winning the match by disqualification after Big Show interfered, becoming the first person to cash in a Money in the Bank contract and not win a trophy. Cena and Punk's feud raged into SummerSlam, where Punk defeated Cena and Big Show in a triple threat match to keep the crown and continued to battle for the title, and Night of Champions on September 16, where the pair fought to a draw. Cena returned to Survivor Series after being hospitalized with a legitimate arm injury on November 18, but Punk tied him in a triple threat match that also featured Ryback. After AJ declared Cena on Cena, the two brothers clashed with Dolph Ziggler over an alleged friendship with AJ Lee and TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 16, losing to Ziggler in a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank contract. Vickie Guerrero and Cena teamed up with Vickie Guerrero on Raw, Cena to face Ziggler and AJ in a mixed tag team match that resulted in a disqualification after Cena was struck by the debuting Big E Langston. Cena defeated Ziggler on the January 7 episode of Raw and then in a steel cage match the following week, despite AJ and Langston's interference in both matches, bringing an end to the feud.

Cena won his second Royal Rumble match on January 27, 2013 and then announced that he will try to win the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29. The Shield and Cena began feuding with The Shield, which culminated in a six-man tag team match at Elimination Chamber, where The Shield were victorious. Cena regained his status as the top contender for the Rock's WWE Championship on February 25 on Raw's #25 episode. He then returned to his rivalry with The Rock. On the October 28 episode of Raw, and Alberto Del Rio in a rematch on November 24 at Survivor Series, he defended his title against Damien Sandow. Cena's next challenge was to unify their respective championships, with The Authority deciding and arranging a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs championship unification match, which Cena lost. On January 26, a rematch took place at the Royal Rumble for the now ununified WWE World Heavyweight Championship, where Cena lost after being distracted by The Wyatt family. The Wyatts continued to play in Cena's games, and the Elimination Chamber on February 23, which resulted in Cena's expulsion in the Elimination Chamber.

Bray Wyatt accepted Cena's challenge for a WrestleMania XXX match after the Elimination Chamber. Wyatt wanted to prove that Cena's heroic act was a sign of "this age of lies" and not to turn Cena into a "monster." At WrestleMania, Cena overcame interference from Luke Harper and Erick Rowan to defeat Wyatt. After WrestleMania based on the fact that Wyatt was capturing Cena's fanbase, the feud rage continued. The Authority added Rollins to the title match against King Rumble involving Cena and Lesnar on January 5th episode of Raw. For participating in Team Cena in the Survivor Series, Ziggler, Ryback, and Rowan were "fired." Cena defeated Rollins, Big Show and Kane in a handicap match on January 19 to keep his title shot at the Royal Rumble and keep the jobs of Ziggler, Ryback, and Rowan. Cena was unsuccessful in capturing the crown at the Royal Rumble on January 25, but not in gaining the crown.

After losing out from his submission, the Accolade, Cena began feuding with United States Champion Rusev, and at Fastlane on February 22, Cena failed to win the title from Rusev. Rusev had a poor blast in Cena as a result of his manager Lana's distraction. Cena challenged Rusev to a rematch, but it was turned down, and Stephanie McMahon announced that Cena would not participate in WrestleMania 31 until Rusev agreed to a rematch. Cena fought Rusev on Monday's Raw 9 episode, refusing to announce the STF submission hold, causing Lana to grant Cena the match. On March 29, Cena defeated Rusev at WrestleMania for the fourth time, marking Rusev's first pinfall loss in the main roster. Cena will hold an open competition every week on the US Championship circuit, pitting the title against Dean Ambrose, Stardust, Bad News Barrett, Kane, Sami Zayn, Neville, Zack Ryder, and Cesaro. Cena retained his title against Rusev in a Russian Chain match on April 26 at Extreme Rules and an "I Quit" match at Payback, bringing an end to the feud. The Authority compelled Cena to defend the US Championship against Rollins on July 27 on Raw. Despite having a legitimate broken nose during the game, Cena defeated Rollins. On August 23, Cena defeated Rollins in a "Winner Takes All" match at SummerSlam, which Cena lost after guest host Jon Stewart - who appeared to side with Cena — fought him with a steel chair, putting Cena's reign to an end.

On September 20, Cena defeated Rollins to win the title for the fifth time, a first at Night of Champions, a mark in the WWE's ownership period of the series. Cena retained his title against Rollins in a steel cage match on October 3 at WWE Live from Madison Square Garden, while also resuming his open challenges. Cena lost the title to returning Alberto Del Rio in an open contest at Hell in a Cell on October 25, 2011. Cena returned to Raw on December 28 after a break, defeating Del Rio by disqualification in a rematch for the title. He underwent shoulder surgery on January 7, which kept him out of action for an undisclosed period of time.

On April 3, 2016, Cena returned to WrestleMania 32, assisting the Rock in defeating The Wyatt Family. On May 30, Cena made his complete return on Raw's Memorial Day issue, four months earlier than had been predicted due to his type of injury. Styles, who betrayed his former colleagues Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in attacking Cena, was confronted by AJ Styles, only to be denied by Styles. Styles defeated Cena with help from Gallows and Anderson on June 19 at Money in the Bank. Cena was again targeted by The Club on July 4th, but Enzo Amore and Big Cass were able to save him, putting up a six-man tag team competition on July 24, which Cena, Amore, and Cass triumphed after Cena pinned Styles. Cena was introduced to the SmackDown brand on the 2016 WWE draft, while still defeating Club member Luke Gallows in a singles competition on July 19th. Cena's feud with Styles remained, but Capena lost their rematch at SummerSlam on August 21, where the two teams met in a slew of feud. Cena and Dean Ambrose met in a triple threat match for the title on October 9 at No Mercy, with Styles later winning the renamed WWE World Championship. Styles pinned him to the match, which came after Ambrose and Cena all requested Styles submit, triggering the match's restart. From WWE to American Grit season 2, Cena took a sabbatical.

Cena defeated Styles at the Royal Rumble on January 29, 2017, defeating Ric Flair for the most prestigious world championship titles at 16, 2017. Cena would lose the championship two weeks later in an Elimination Chamber match against Bray Wyatt on February 12. In a match also starring Styles, two nights later on SmackDown, Cena lost a triple threat match against Wyatt for the championship. Cena and the Miz grew up to a feud with The Miz, with Miz accusing Cena of being a hypocrite because of his film work, while Miz accused Miz of stealing other wrestlers' moves and personalities. Miz's wife Maryse slapped Cena before Cena and his partner Nikki Bella told Miz and Maryse that they were fleeing. Daniel Bryan, the SmackDown General Manager, then organized a mixed tag team match for WrestleMania 33 on April 2, which Cena and Bella won. After the match, Cena proposed marriage to Bella, which she accepted.

During the Superstar Shake-Up in July 2017, WWE dubbed Cena a "free agent," implying he could work for both the Raw and SmackDown brands. On July 23, Cena defeated Rusev in a flag contest at Battleground, Baron Corbin at SummerSlam, but Roman Reigns defeated No Mercy on September 24. Cena was back to SmackDown the next month after Commissioner Shane McMahon announced him as the final member of Team SmackDown against Team Raw at Survivor Series; the event was later dismissed by Kurt Angle, and Team SmackDown was defeated by Team SmackDown.

Cena was caught in a storyline in which he was trying to find his "path to WrestleMania" and was intrigued. Cena fought The Undertaker for a match at WrestleMania 34 after losing the Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber match on January 28 and the Elimination Chamber to determine the next top contender for the Universal Championship on February 25 and a six-pack challenge at Fastlane for the WWE Championship on March 25. He reiterated his doubt over the next few weeks, but Undertaker gave him no response. Undertaker made an impromptu return and accepted Cena's challenge at WrestleMania on April 8, resulting in a thrilling Cena loss to Undertaker in less than two minutes. Cena defeated Triple H in the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27, referring to his defeat to Undertaker at WrestleMania and his recent breakup with Nikki Bella. He went on hiatus to concentrate on his acting and television careers. At Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia, Cena returned to compete against Elias and Kevin Owens against Elias and Owens. On November 2, he had been scheduled for a match at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia, but Cena declined to attend the function after the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Sports Illustrated announced on November 29 that Cena had been named the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award winner.

On the January 1 episode of SmackDown, Cena returned to WWE television. He put out an open challenge to any man in the locker room, but Becky Lynch (who had started referring to herself as "The Man" earlier) answered the call. Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega were interrupted by Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega's match, which Cena and Lynch won. In a triple threat match against Finn Bálor and Drew McIntyre on January 14, 2019, Raw, Cena ranked as the top contender for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble, but Bálor defeated Bálor. Cena had expected to compete in the Royal Rumble match on January 27, but had to cancel due to an in-storyline ankle injury sustained during the previous triple threat match. He appeared at WrestleMania 35 on April 7 as the "Doctor of Thuganomics" persona and interrupted Elias' performance, naming it after insulting it, while insulting it by the F-U). Cena returned on July 22 in the form of Raw Reunion, where he was involved in a rap war with The Usos.

Following a seven-month absence, Cena returned to WWE on February 28, 2020, episode of SmackDown. He seemed to announce his retirement before being approached by "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt, who challenged him to a match at WrestleMania 36—a sequel to their WrestleMania XXX match in 2014, which Cena accepted. On the second night of the competition, rather than a traditional wrestling match, the two teams met in a strange cinematic-style match called a Firefly Fun House match, taking the participants on a journey through history, including Cena's debut against Kurt Angle, a moment starring his Doctor of Thuganomics character, and the pair's match at WrestleMania XXX. Wyatt beat Cena at WrestleMania. Cena's motionless body vanished from the middle of the fight following Wyatt's triumph.

Cena was unable to attend WrestleMania 37, the first time he had wrestled or at least attended the festival every year since his first appearance at WrestleMania XIX in 2003. At the time, Cena was filming in Canada, but the pandemic made it logistically impossible for him to travel to Tampa, Florida, for WrestleMania 37, because the series had to stop production for two weeks. In this period, Cena did appear in a WWE commercial to help announce the location of WrestleMania 38. After 15 months, Cena made his return to WWE at the Money in the Bank event on July 18, 2021, after the former champion retained his Universal Championship in the main event. WWE confirmed the Cena tour in the summer of Cena by noting that Cena had signed a 25-appearance contract. Cena ultimately missed a contract signing on the July 30 episode of SmackDown, ensuring he would face Finn Bálor for the title. Reigns defeated Cena in a back-and-forth match on August 21, according to the organizers.

Cena would return on the WWE's June 27 episode, marking the 20th anniversary of his main roster's in-ring debut on June 6, 2022. Cena revived and cut a promo on Raw's episode, thanking the fans and thanking them for their continued help. During a backstage segment with Theory, Cena declined a selfie, hinting at a future clash between the two teams.
